It had been a long, but productive day. After the meeting with the queen and the tour of the dairy, Willa finally got to see the factory where the chocolate was made. It was a process Willa never thought much about, but now was fascinated by. Unfortunately, there were no Oompa Loompas at the factory this time either.

Although the shaping and flavouring of Ashby Chocolates happened in Australia, the couverture chocolate was made here in Merveille. It was a process of roasting cacao beans and then crushing them and finally mixing them with sugar and cocoa butter and sometimes milk to get the correct type of chocolate, whether milk or dark. The white chocolate wasn’t technically chocolate at all because it contained no cacao but did contain cocoa butter.

The emergency that brought them to Merveille had something to do with the cacao beans. Willa hadn’t understood the whole conversation Jake had with the foreman—it had been in a mixture of English and French and she lost track once they started using words she didn’t understand. From what she gathered, the supplier of the beans shipped them an inferior product and it tainted the famed Ashby Chocolate. They called Jake in to determine whether the entire ‘roast’ and all the products made from it would need to be discarded. Thankfully none of the tainted chocolate had left the factory but it would put them behind in production. Jake seemed particularly concerned that it might be the work of a saboteur. Willa didn’t believe that someone would go to so much trouble, it was just chocolate. That had been met with an exasperated eye roll and she had been shown just how much damage something like this could do to the Ashby Chocolate brand if it hadn’t been caught in time.

Jake was then locked in a lab all afternoon while she’d had to amuse herself. Jet lag had pulled at her until she’d dragged Jake from the lab and made him come home. Now they sat in the living room surrounded by food that Marguerite had left warming in the oven for them and a fire glowing in the hearth. Jake still had a worried look on his face as he read through the notes he’d made. Today had been an easy day for her, but tomorrow her real work would start. It would be her job to transcribe and organise all of Jake’s notes into something legible and reportable. But for now, it was late and it was just the two of them and she wanted…the simple answer was she wanted Jake.

He sat on the floor with his back against the lounge flipping through pages of notes. His hair was a little mussed from where he kept running his hands through it. The top few buttons of his shirt were undone and a tempting triangle of skin and dark hair was visible. He looked tired and ever so slightly rumpled and it was a good look on him. Willa had changed out of her suit and into a comfy t-shirt dress, but Jake hadn’t bothered.
