ChaPTer Twelve

The moment they ordered, Skye launched in. “What’re the

leads you’re so anxious to share? You know, the leads you

got while ignoring my request that you let me do my job?”

Aimee ignored her in favor of the large bowl of steaming queso

the waiter delivered to their table. Skye would be pissed off when

she heard about Aimee’s trip to the Baxter house, and she wasn’t

going to let her crankiness ruin this meal. Aimee doctored the cheesy

goodness with heaps of salsa and pico de gallo, then wrapped the

concoction in a warm corn tortilla and shoved it at Skye. “Eat. It will

soothe your soul.”

Skye wrinkled her nose at the dripping mess. “My soul’s fine.”

“Eat.” Aimee dangled the mess closer. Skye took a bite before a

large glop of queso fell onto her jacket. She groaned. Aimee smiled.

“See, I told you.”

“Fine. You’re a queso connoisseur.”

“Don’t forget the corn tortillas.” She pointed toward the back

of the restaurant. “They make them fresh here.” She sighed. “I could

live here.”

“Here in Austin, or here in this restaurant?”

“Both. Seriously, couldn’t you eat this goodness every day?”

“Why don’t you? Live in Austin, I mean.”

Good question. “I don’t know. I guess because my friends and

family are in Dallas. I’m not sure geographic distance would make

any difference with my family. We’re distant enough as it is, but

my friends? Well, I don’t think I could make it without them. We

went to college down here, but we’re all from Dallas and moved

back when we graduated. We hang out together all the time.” Like

that night at the bar when I first saw you. “They’re my real family.”

Lame answer. Aimee dove back into her food to avoid extending her

pitiful sounding response.

“You’re lucky to have a group of friends you can count on.”

Aimee didn’t miss the wistful tone in Skye’s voice. “I suppose

most of your friends were cops?” Skye pushed her chair back and

crossed her arms, her demeanor shifting from wistful to defensive.

Aimee immediately wished she could yank the words back. “Sorry.

None of my business.”

“Yeah, well, speaking of business. You hired me to do a job.

Any reason why you are running around doing it behind my back?”

“As you’re fond of pointing out, I didn’t hire you. Morgan and

Parker did. I’m not doing anything behind your back. I told you

last night I would help. Not my fault you can’t accept help.” At the

rate this conversation was going, Aimee didn’t think there was ever

going to be an appropriate moment to share the news about her find.

“I don’t need your help. I’m making progress. Before you

interrupted, I learned some valuable information from Professor

Latamore.”

Ah, an opening. “About?”

“Nicki’s boyfriend, Earl Baxter.”

“Interesting.” Aimee’s steady composure burst into a smug

grin. Skye pounced. “What the hell is so funny?”

“Nothing’s funny. I’m merely waiting to hear what you found

out about Earl so we can compare notes.” She plunged back into the

queso as Skye contemplated her statement.

Big sigh. “Okay, junior detective, tell me what you found.”

“I found out where Earl lives, or at least where he lived until

a few weeks ago.” Aimee filled in the details of her search, ending

with the story of her visit with Earl’s grandfather.
