Chapter Eight

"Jeb!" Erik still had the blanket pulled up to his chin, but the expression of astonishment on his face was easy to see. "You can't slam the door in the alpha's face. He could see that as a challenge."

He sounded frantic.

"Erik, two days ago, that man was merely Rob Colton, my best friend since kindergarten. He didn't become alpha of the Silver Lake Clan until last night. I can bet you anything that right now, his mate is having to hold him up because Rob is laughing his damn ass off. He is not going to think I challenged him."

Erik's face quickly paled. "He's only been alpha for a few hours?"

"Relax, baby. Rob is going to be a good alpha. I have all the confidence in the world in him. If I didn't, I wouldn't have accepted the position of enforcer of his clan."

"So, if he's only been the alpha since yesterday, is that how long you've been an enforcer?"

Erik's face totally drained of color when Jeb nodded. He looked as if he was about to keel over. "We're all gonna die."

Jeb chuckled. "We are not going to die, osezno. Have a little faith." He walked over to sit on the side of the bed, reaching for Erik's hand. "I want to tell you a little story."

"What kind of story?"

Jeb just grinned. "Once, a long, long time ago." Two weeks. "There was a young man who'd just graduated from bear school. He was very excited to begin work in his father's construction business, but before he could, he met his mate. Now, usually, that is a time of great celebration, but there was a problem."

Erik had a frown on his face when he asked, "What sort of problem?"

"Someone was abusing his mate, and had been for a very long time. So, this young man claimed his mate, promising that everything would be okay. But the mate was kidnapped by the man who was abusing him. The young man became enraged, and in his bid to protect his mate, he attacked the son of the alpha."

Erik gasped.

"He won the fight, but he'd still committed the crime of attacking the alpha's heir."

"Did he die?"

"No."

Erik's eyes rounded. "No?"

Jeb shook his head. "It would seem that the young man's mate was a special kind of bear. He was an omega bear, which instantly made this young man an alpha bear the second he claimed his mate. But that too created a problem for them. Two alphas cannot be in the same clan, so they were banished."

Erik gasped again. "Banished?"

"When they left their clan, they did not leave alone. Several people left with them, refusing to stay somewhere that their friends could not stay. They drove and drove and drove looking for a new place to set down roots, until one day they found this little town way up in the mountains. There was a bear clan there in need of a new alpha, so, after a bit of discussion and one simple challenge, they settled down in their new clan.
