Chapter 19

“Love Bites”

“Uncle Kane, you should have been there!” The young woman’s excited voice echoed through the apartment the instant she stepped through the front door and he heard the light thump of equipment being set down, then the door closed and Zoe appeared in the kitchen doorway seconds later. “It was freaking awesome!”

Kane chuckled as he stood at the sink, his back to her, and carefully bathed the pup with puppy shampoo and warm water. “So I take it everything went well.” His button shirt was open down the front, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, as he attempted to avoid another canine shower.

“Uh, yeah!” Zoe laughed and walked over to the sink. “Who’s this?” She lightly scratched the pup’s wet head.

“A last minute patient.” Tension seeped into his body with the memories of the previous night. He kept insisting it hadn’t really happened, that it had all been just some vivid dream, but to his dismay he was much too grounded in reality to play that card.

“What’s his name?” Zoe tickled the pup’s ear. “Or her name.”

“His name,” Kane said. “I don’t think he has one. He was brought in as a stray, I think.”

“So what’s going to happen to him?” Zoe hopped up and sat on the counter, watching her uncle take great care with the animal. She flopped her blond ponytail to the side and leaned on her hands. “Will he be sent to an animal shelter?” She had never been fond of the shelters, especially the ones that put animals down. Kane didn’t favor them either.

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

“Who brought him in?” she asked. “Maybe they’ll try to find him a home. I mean, if they cared enough to take a stray to the vet.”

Kane thought about the Egyptian’s coarseness towards the pup and couldn’t imagine him having any interest in the dog’s fate. Maybe the cowboy, but even he hadn’t seemed willing to take on the responsibility for the animal. “I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.”

“What happened to him, anyway?”

“Someone kicked him,” Kane murmured. “He has injured ribs.”

“Kicked on purpose?” Zoe frowned.

“That would be my guess.”

Zoe scowled. “Pricks.”

Kane raised his head and looked at her.

“Sorry,” she smiled sheepishly.

“Well,” Kane relented. “In this case, it’s surely warranted. Just…don’t get in the habit of using that word.”

Zoe smiled sweetly. “Yes, sir.”

“And don’t be a smart alec,” he muttered, a smirk playing on his lips.

Zoe reached over to pet the pup again and her stare caught on Kane’s exposed torso. She raised a slow eyebrow, a wry smile curving her lips. “What happened to you?” she laughed. “Did Sebastian turn on you?”

“What?” Kane frowned and looked at her. “What’re you talking about?”

Clearing her throat discreetly, Zoe smirked and nodded at his open shirt. “Those look like bite marks to me.”

Kane’s pulse spiked and he looked down at his chest and stomach –and the brands left behind by the Egyptian’s strong, sharp teeth. Shit. His hands dripping soap and water, he hurriedly tugged his shirt closed, fastening a couple buttons.
