Meditation

Most of us go through each day with our brains working unceasingly, with very little of it in constructive thought. When we are doing some particular task, our minds are concentrated on that task, and the thoughts are useful. But most of the daily thought is in the form of fantasy and speculation, sort of like daydreaming. We are not really in control of what the brain is thinking, why?

Take a good look at yourself and realise how much of your thinking is fumbling mumbo jumbo, observe how much of your waking thought is filled with nonsense. The real mind will then take greater control of the tough functions. If you deliberately meditate on it daily and always try to make definite period the same time each day, so that it becomes habit, you will gradually come to realise that mind is separate from brain, mind is the WATCHER, and only participates to the point of setting things in motion. You can also meditate at other times, whenever in fact you feel you want to, but do have one set period daily.

Sit upright but comfortable, the back as straight as possible, in some quite spot where you will not be disturbed. Then say a little prayer to the Divine INSIDE YOU, even if it is only to say: Here I am, Lord, to meet and get to know you.

You then have to learn control and subdue your thoughts, you cannot empty your mind, there is too much activity for that to be possible, but just as when doing some task, you control useless thought by giving the brain something to concentrate on.

Listen to the silence, listen for the sounds of your own body. Or feel your breath entering and leaving your body, at the point of your nose. Or concentrate on the light of a candle, or a picture. Concentrate; put your whole awareness into it. It is this awareness which will go to meet the inner power and unite with it, till you realise it is you and you are it, or I AM THAT I AM.

When you have thus learned to meditate and control the mind, you will be better able to understand the contents of this book. Take a subject at a time. Consider all the combinations, all the things that are not included, all the possibilities. Without this one pointed meditation, you will never grasp the whole and make it your own.

Don’t forget colours and musical sounds are every bit as important as any other symbolism. To visualise a colour and hum a sound can help in each instance.

The best time for quite meditation that refreshes is early in the morning, learning meditation is better just before retiring.

The whole object as I have said is to come to know the real self, and through self to come to know God. He cannot be seen, but he can be known, it needs desire to know, a loving longing to know, a careful watching to cut away the useless dross of materiality.
