Chapter Three
I shot through the woods in the direction of the city. Weaving and twisting through the brush, I ran as fast as my four legs could carry me without crashing into one of the trees. The pain from a possible collision meant nothing to me, but the momentum and time I’d lose in having to recover meant everything. Ash needed me. Every nanosecond was precious.
Even as I ran to save Ash, I cursed him. If he wasn’t in wolf form, I wouldn’t be able to find him. My field of vision scattered as I ran. My feet still felt the floor of the woods beneath my feet, and I ran on through a combination of memory and instinct. My eyes saw something different: Ash scrambling upright from the ground on his hands and knees. Four parallel gashes, bloody and jagged, ran diagonally along his back from shoulder to ass.
Fear and desperation had returned to his eyes. I had far preferred the anger I saw in them last night. Why hadn’t he shifted into his wolf form to fight back already? It was still too early for him to control where and when he changed to wolf form, but surely it should happen on instinct in a life or death situation.
At the edge of the forest, the pulse flickered. It was faint and fading with each passing second, but it was there. I skittered to a stop and let out an anguished howl. It pulled me toward the complete opposite of where I had expected—not toward the city but deeper into the woods.
I whirled around and headed back in the direction I came from only seconds earlier. How had I not recognized my own woods? What was Ash doing this far from town? The visions did not return. Even with the nearly full moon high in the sky above me, I felt blind.
A light rain began to fall and settled around like a fine mist. The water dulled my nose and masked Ash’s scent from me. The mist reflected the moonlight and dimmed my vision.
The first time the pulse vanished I nearly tripped over my feet. Surely if Ash died, I would know it, wouldn’t I? I howled and kept running in the same direction. I heard the softest howl answer me back.
I ran past the safehouse and deeper into the woods. My heart slammed into my chest. When I finally saw him, Ash lay flat on his back in human form. He was still. Impossibly still. The wolf stalked alongside his body and dipped forward toward his throat. With a growl, I threw myself at him. My body collided into his, and we tumbled away from Ash. I didn’t even have a chance to see if he was breathing or not.
Placing myself between Ash and the wolf, I crouched low, ready to spring. I bared my teeth and growled at him. My fur bristled, and my eyes narrowed. I waited for the wolf to attack me. He did not.
The wolf transformed before my eyes.
