District 1

The First Congressional District is the westernmost of Florida’s congressional districts, bordering Alabama. Made up of five counties, the 2012 district changed very little after reapportionment and remains one of the most conservative, and least racially diverse, districts in the nation. In 2012 it had R+21 rating on Cook’s voting index. In 2012, the incumbent was Republican Jeff Miller who had represented the district since 2001 after a special election due to the resignation of another Republican, Joe Scarborough. Miller, one of the staunchest conservatives in the House began his career in the Florida House of Representatives and had been a deputy sheriff. The Democratic candidate was Jim Bryan, the owner of a towing business who had previously been a professional soldier; a former army paratrooper with 3 combat tours in Vietnam and two purple hearts for combat wounds. Miller was easily re-elected with 69.6% to Bryan’s 27.1%.
