Chapter 23

The BMW vanished to the right. It reappeared a few seconds later in a parking space across the lane. Kyle motioned everyone around the corner and into the side hall out of sight of the front door.

"We've got to get out of here," he said, looking toward the back.

"But I need to reset the alarm," Jenny said.

"How long does it take to arm when you set it?"

"Ninety seconds, I think. Maybe sixty."

"Does it beep when it's arming?"

"No, not if you press pound twice."

Ramani calculated the distance to the back door. "We can make it."

Kyle groaned. "I have to run again, don't I?"

"How do you set the alarm?" Ramani asked.

Jenny gave her the simple key combination. "Remember to press pound twice so it won't beep."

"You two run to the back now, and I'll set it. That should give you time to make it."

Kyle started to jog and collapsed on his knees. "Oh, God. I think I pulled something earlier today."

"Walk if you have to," Ramani said, "but go!"

The front door rattled. Ramani gasped and her pulse quickened. She peered around the corner. The Japanese man opened a briefcase and pulled out a device with a cable attached to a card. He slid it into the card reader and stared at it. He would probably have the door open in a minute. There was no time to waste. She slipped inside Jenny's office, went to the alarm console, and activated it. A green light began to flash, alternating with a red light.

She sprinted down the hall toward her department. She burst through the door and screeched to a halt. Jenny and Kyle were coming toward her. Jenny was panting hysterically. Kyle grimaced with each step.

"Someone's coming in the back door," he said. "We are well and truly screwed."

"I set the alarm. It will arm in a few seconds."

"Lovely." He glanced around the room. "There are two sensors in here." He pointed to the small, square boxes on the walls. "Are there any rooms without sensors?"

"Perhaps the bathroom," Ramani said.

He hobbled toward the back of the department. She and Jenny followed. In the back hall, the single wall sensor also had LEDs flashing between red and green. The rhythm was much faster than it had been seconds earlier. The alarm would arm itself at any moment. As they walked, Ramani scanned the hallway for more sensors, but it had only the one at the far end. The side hallway that connected it to the front area also lacked sensors.

Kyle entered the women's bathroom and inspected the ceiling and walls. "It's clean."

"What good is this going to do?" Jenny asked. "Now we're trapped."

Ramani explained what the Japanese man was doing. "He may have some way to disable the alarm."

"We're done for," Kyle groaned as he slumped against the wall. "You guys are gonna have to carry me or leave me."

Jenny's wide eyes flicked around the room. "We have to get out of here. I could get fired for this." The panic in her voice was steadily rising.
