The Squeeze

I admit it. All along, I was winging it as a parent. I was always sort of hoping that some cosmic scale would balance out all the things I was doing wrong and right. I sort of figured that somehow, some way, enough of the things I did right would stick to my child so that when he finally flew the coop he would be able to handle the world on his own.

I never expected the launching to go without a hitch—I never thought it would be perfectly smooth or in a straight line. But never did I consider that it would be a total flop. Never did I consider that addiction would be the thing to muck everything up. I slog through each day knowing that instead of happy and safe and productive and surrounded by people who truly love him, my son is lurking around in dark shadows, living a wretched life full of pain and self-destruction.

My heart hurts for my child; it feels like a lemon being squeezed.
