We drive the short distance from the coffee shop to the Kings of Hell’s Kitchen headquarters in complete silence, my mind swirling with everything that’s happened over the past hour. My dad is a criminal, and a dangerous one, and apparently he means me some kind of harm. Killian is pretending to be my boyfriend to protect me, like I’m a piece of property two men are competing over. I should like it, but I don’t. I don’t want pretend. I want the freedom to choose for myself.

It feels like a scenario out of a book, one I’d very much like to read, with the brooding, sexy hitman protecting the heroine.

Living it, on the other hand…definitely not as great. I feel like I’m caught in the middle with no voice. No say. I don’t even understand what the hell’s going on.

We pull up to an Art Deco style high-rise on West 50th, and Killian turns down a small, almost unnoticeable alleyway right beside it. There’s a downward slope, and then suddenly, a sleek metal door is opening, and he takes us into the underground parking. The door slides shut behind us, and we arrive at another gate. Killian powers down his window and punches a long string of digits into the keypad nestled into the concrete wall, and the gate lifts, letting us through. He navigates through the labyrinthine space easily, parking and then coming around to open my door for me.

“It’s like Fort Knox in here,” I say, and I have this creeping sense of dread. Like I’m about to be whisked into witness protection or something.

“At least you’ll be safe here.”

“As opposed to?”

But he doesn’t answer, intensifying that sense of dread making my stomach feel like it’s dropping to the ground.

I start to step down from the SUV, but my legs are shaky, and I stumble slightly. Killian’s there, sliding an arm around my waist, and it makes me think of the night we met. It feels like so long ago now.

“Thanks,” I breathe, my heart shaking in my chest from the adrenaline.

“You don’t need to thank me,” he says, moving a little closer. His eyes are dark and hungry, and God, I want to feed him. “In fact, if you knew the shit in my brain, you wouldn’t.”

I slide my hand up his chest. I can’t get enough of how solid and warm he is. How safe I feel surrounded by him. It’s like coming home to something I didn’t even know I was missing.

“What’s in your brain, Killian?”

He dips his head, his breath ghosting over my ear. “You.”

I make a small whimpering sound, but then he pulls away and takes my hand, leading me to an elevator in the far back corner.

Killian scans his thumbprint to call the elevator, and it arrives soundlessly to whisk us up to the lobby. I realize then that the building doesn’t have any front doors facing the street. It’s sealed up tight, so that no one who isn’t supposed to be here can get in.
