Thump. Thump. Thump.
Baby. Baby. Baby.
Every beat of my heart said the same word in a staccato beat. I lay there on the cot, wondering—yet also not really wondering—who had covered me in the night. I knew damn well that none of the nurses had done it. No, this was the thoughtfulness of a certain would-be Dom.
I got up and folded the blanket, taking my seat beside Dakota as he roused. He blinked slowly, taking his time to return to full wakefulness.
“Good morning, big guy.” His voice was raspy still, and thick with sleep.
“Hey, babe. Good morning to you, too.” I leaned over and kissed his cheek. “I can’t believe it’s going on nine o’clock. I think I laid down about four, so that means I actually got about five hours of sleep? That’s amazing. Like, you have no idea.”
“I bet. I can’t even imagine how scary it must have been for you to watch me go through this. I’d have hated every second of this shit if I’d been in your shoes. Did you see the accident?”
Shaking my head, I wobbled a hand from side to side. “Kinda? I mean, I heard it, but I missed seeing it happen. I’d been up on the hill having lunch.”
“I’m glad. It would hurt more if I knew you carried the memory of seeing me get hit. It’s bad enough you were there afterward.” He smiled wistfully. “I appreciate you being at my side all this time. But then, you’re always there for me.”
“And I always will be—it’s where I belong. Right there at your side. Now, tell me something… have you been having any crazy stoner dreams? You were pretty out of it for a while there.”
Dakota laughed. “Not that I remember?”
We made small talk about nothing and everything while carefully avoiding any baby talk. I didn’t know if Dakota wasn’t ready to breach that subject yet, or if he felt awkward discussing who the father might be. Either way, I wasn’t going to push. Instead, I pulled a deck of cards out of my pocket that I’d picked up in the gift shop and began dealing out a game of rummy on his tray table.
When an orderly took Dakota for some testing several hours later, I got up and made my way back down to the cafeteria. I was pleased to see that they still had breakfast options available—probably due to the fact that time stood still in these places. Either that, or it hadn’t been cleared away yet.
Gross.
Combing my fingers through my hair, I waited in line to get my tray and selected my meal. After I finally got through the line and finished overpaying for limp bacon, thin pancakes, underdone eggs, and a fruit bowl that looked like it had seen better days, I grabbed a cup of coffee and found myself a table.
My mind wandered over our situation as I ate my bland food. By the time I’d finished and was sipping my coffee, I was feeling guilty,
