Jace was back when I woke up. Seeing him as I opened my eyes, I didn’t have to think about where I was and why my cave looked so wrong and smelled like forest. Jace was carrying buckets of water inside. I watched him lazily, thinking about that time he’d tried to wash my face. It was just yesterday, but it felt like I’d been here forever, letting him take care of me. I groaned. For a dragon, I sure was pathetic.
“Oh, you’re up.”
“Not up,” I mumbled. “Just awake.” Had I been up and walking I would have been out of here.
“Do you want to get washed up?” he brought a bucket closer. “Not to offend you or anything, but you could use some water.”
“I guess,” I said. If I were a real dragon, I could roll myself in flames and burn the dirt off.
“You’re not looking so hot,” Jace said.
“Feeling hot, though.”
“Has the pain gotten worse?”
“No, actually…” I stopped. It was true, I wasn’t in pain. Even when I bent my knee a little, it was fine. I wasn’t sure what was going on with my body, how my leg had healed so fast, and why my skin was burning up. I sat up. “Give me that.” I grabbed the bucket of water from him, held it to my lips and drank. Then I emptied the rest of it over my head.
“Hey, slow down, you’re flooding my house!”
I took a deep breath. “Sorry, it’s just…” What was it? “I’m so hot.” I had a bad, a really bad feeling that I knew what it was. Only it wasn’t supposed to happen. Not until next month, and not here. I was early. I was fucking early. I laughed. A desperate sound.
And then I screamed. Pain ripped through me unlike anything I’d ever experienced in my life. It spread from the center of my being out into every cell of my body, searing my flesh as it went. My own screams echoed in my head, but I didn’t even really hear them. I was engulfed in the feeling of my soul splitting from my body. It was my beast, trying to break free, trying to gain power over the feeble cage that was my human body. It didn’t understand that it wasn’t possible.
When the feeling let up I’d curled up in a ball in an unconscious attempt to hold on to myself. I was breathing hard. Beads of sweat ran down my forehead. No one had ever told me it would be this painful.
I’d heard stories about ‘coming of age’, but I’d never thought it would be so bad.
The worst was that I didn’t have a way to stop it.
The dragon in me needed to be tamed. And the one who was supposed to do it was miles away.
“What’s… what’s going on with you?” Jace looked at me, concern written plain on his face. He seemed ready to jump.
“It’s…” I swallowed. My throat was raw. “It’s a dragon thing.”
“Are you sick?”
“No, I…” The pain welled up again and I bit my lips in an effort to stay quiet.
