Chapter Nine

Chance gulped the last remnants of his coffee down and tossed it in the trash can. As usual, and in keeping with the shit morning he’d had, the cup bounced off the rim and landed on the floor. Any other day he might have gotten up and tossed it inside, but he was beyond tired and this wasn’t just any other day.

They were all still waiting for the sheriff to get off the phone and come out of his office to direct them what to do next. The night at the lake had been too damn long with a bunch of nosy locals trying to find out what happened, and a bunch of tourists who suddenly acted like they were the paparazzi trying to get the perfect shot for the National Enquirer.

Despite the hustle and bustle of all that was going on in the station, it didn’t prevent him from hearing a loud growl. He looked down when his stomach rumbled and he rubbed at his empty belly. Luckily Garrison had gone over to Café Jax to pick everyone up some breakfast.

Chance had surrendered and ordered their signature dish Jax Benedict. It was their version of Eggs Benedict. He rationalized his poor choice in menu item by two things, the first being that Café Jax used turkey and Canadian bacon instead of ham and regular bacon, the second reason being he was so damn hungry he was damn near ready to chew his own hand off. So anything, even saturated fat and grease, sounded edible at this point.

Sheriff Larkin hung up his phone and marched out of his office. Everyone was on edge, especially the sheriff. He was only a couple years away from retirement, and if he was to believe what the sheriff had ranted about nearly a dozen times for the past ten hours, it would seem that Sheriff Larkin was getting too old for this shit.

“Okay.” Larkin stood before Chance and two other deputies with his hands on his hips. “I just got off the phone with the coroner and it’s been confirmed. The weapon used to kill Elise Ridley appears to have the same characteristics of the one used in the O’Learys’ murders.”

“So wait…he came back?” Deputy Ollinger, a twenty-two year veteran of the Eureka Police Department asked.

“It would seem so. Not sure what else to think. I already put in a call to Special Agents Clarkson and Hanson hoping they can shed some light on it because I’m stumped. I haven’t heard back from them, but someone up at Quantico said they received word and are heading our way.”

“Yeah, but didn’t they say their profile of the killer didn’t lead them to believe he would come back to the same place twice? Something about…new hunting grounds? Or something like that?” Chance asked.

“Well what do you want me to tell you, Jackson? The coroner said the wound track is the same. From the length, width, and depth of the cuts he doesn’t know what else to think and quite frankly neither do I.
