Chapter Twenty-Two
Owen
Frowning at the last paragraph I just re-read, I wasn’t satisfied in the least. The feelings I wanted to evoke weren’t coming across clearly. For the fifth time, I pressed backspace, erasing all the words I had spent most of the morning typing. I had to get it perfect, though, before I could move on. It was just the way I worked. Otherwise it would be a thorn in my side, always niggling me until I went back and fixed the error. Although these words weren’t really an error, they were just far from the words I had anticipated writing.
A knock on the door sounded, but I was so focused on the computer before me that I barely acknowledged it.
“Owen, I need you a minute.”
I glanced up at Declan’s voice to find him at the entrance of the half-opened office door. His office which I had taken up residence in. At first, I thought he would have been upset that I had invaded his work area, but he hadn’t minded in the least. After he came home from work too many times to find me at his desk, typing, he’d set up a little area all for me in his office. Now in the evening, we could be found working together before taking a break.
Usually I would be the one to have our meals prepared and had to remind Declan to pause all the work to join me, but now it was the opposite. I had already sent out query letters about my novel, including the requested sample chapters which meant I had to finish up the novel quickly in the event I was asked for the full manuscript. Not that I anticipated being so lucky as to get accepted on the first try. I already knew that I’d probably be rejected dozens of times, but hopefully one day I’d get accepted. That was my dream.
I launched myself fully into the project, deciding that if I was going to be serious about publishing and quitting my job, then I needed to put in the work.
“Right now?” I asked him, frowning, because I loathed getting up from the computer without figuring out the right words to say, and not have Jack coming off as a complete jerk while trying to get his point across. “I’m kind of in the middle of an important scene.”
He glanced at his watch, then back at me. “The applicants will be here in the next fifteen minutes. It’s important to me that you show up as this affects you too. I don’t want to choose someone you don’t like.”
I tried not to show how blank I was as I struggled to remember our earlier conversation while we were having breakfast. I couldn’t for the life of me remember anything about applicants though.
“You don’t remember,” he said on a sigh. “When you get caught up in your world, you’re completely zoned out, aren’t you?”
I couldn’t decide if he was upset or teasing. He was right though, and I felt guilty about it.
