The following evening found Max listening to the last speaker at a charity function before the Lions game. The function was held at the Missouri Athletic Club. The historic club was a throwback to the time when men were men…and women were at home where they belonged.

It now had a few women members, because the club had been forced to change with the times. Yet the place still retained its old boys’ club atmosphere. There was dark paneling on the walls, and real paintings, and it was furnished with good, bulky furniture.

He looked down the dais. All the men looked properly important and at home. Chantal looked anything but. He could just imagine what she thought about this old boys’ club.

Her opinion would no doubt be mirrored by Amy Jane’s.

Finally the speaker finished and the function began to break up as everyone left to go to the game at the Dome. Max’s plan for a quick getaway was scotched by a talkative CEO.

Amy Jane sat at the Dome watching the Lions play the Red Wings and wondering why Max wasn’t in the broadcast booth.

She had made the trip up several times, but only Corey and Chantal were working.

Why would Max miss announcing an important game like the playoffs? She’d asked, but neither Corey nor Chantal knew where Max was. The last they’d seen of him had been at the Missouri Athletic Club where all three had been attending a charity function.

Was he with Miranda? Surely he wouldn’t do something that foolish. No, this was too important a game.

Had something happened to him? Had his stalker moved from making threats to taking action—or hired someone to harm him…

“Did you see that?” Claire asked, jumping up.

“What?” Amy Jane asked, standing.

“Aren’t you paying attention to the game? That bruiser on the Red Wings team blasted Bobby from behind, driving him headfirst into the boards. See, he just got a two-minute penalty against him.”

Amy Jane tried to pay attention to the game as they sat back down, watching Bobby get set for a power-play goal. But she couldn’t seem to keep her mind on the game or her eyes on the ice.

Where was Max?

Unable to sit still, she got up from her seat.

“Where are you going now?” Claire asked, dragging her eyes from the ice.

“I’m going to check the broadcast booth again to see if Max has shown up.”

“Bring me a Coke on your way back,” Claire requested, her gaze drawn back to center ice as a fight broke out.
