CHAPTER TWELVE
Murphy
At first, it felt as though the club was tiptoeing around me, trying to ease me into their being there, despite the clubhouse being their residence, not mine.
Maybe they knew I was so accustomed to being alone, that it was a big transition to have people all around.
When I took the dogs downstairs in the early morning, Coach was already outside, doing yoga or meditating. I could see the red-headed Morgaine letting out her chickens or toying with her garden.
When I made it back inside, Detroit was putting together breakfast.
But everyone introduced themselves to me one by one, giving me time to adjust, to get used to the rhythms of the place.
It was the fourth day staying there when I was coming down from the unfinished third floor that Iâd set up as a work station, so I didnât have a bunch of distractions, when I found Morgaine alone in the kitchen, holding a big mug between her hands, a half-eaten chocolate bar on the island.
âHey, I was hoping to catch you alone,â she said, giving me a soft smile.
âOh, have the dogs been bothering you or the chickens?â I asked, having seen them sniffing around the coop, but I was pretty sure theyâd been behaving themselves.
âNo, no. Theyâre angels. Itâs just⦠I have something for you,â she said, reaching into her pocket, and pulling out something on a dainty chain, then holding it out to me.
It was a necklace with an assortment of little round beads in the front.
âTo keep you safe,â she said, giving me a smile I didnât know her well enough to interpret.
I didnât really know the woman, but I got the whole hippie-earth-goddess vibe from her, so I thought that maybe she meant it was going to keep me safe in, you know, a woo-woo sort of way. Like maybe there was some sort of spiritual significance to the stone or something.
âThank you,â I said, meaning it. I mean, I didnât remember the last time someone gave me a gift.
âTry to wear it all the time,â she suggested. âJust not in the shower.â
âOkay,â I agreed, already pulling it down over my head. âThank you so much. I love it.â
And I did.
And I maybe loved her a little bit because of it too.
It was new to me, the strength of connection I was starting to feel toward all of these people.
Delaney, with her sweet baby and her devoted husband. Crow and Morgaine. Coach with his quiet sort of wisdom. Slash with his strong, stoic vibe. Nyx, with her confidence and outspokenness, and her absolutely ridiculous pregnancy cravings.
And Sway.
Sway, of course, above all others.
I tried to tell myself that it was simply because Iâd known him the longest, that weâd shared a bit more with each other.
It was more than that, though, and I knew it. I was becoming more sure of it with each passing day.
Weâd fallen into a comfortable rhythm, the two of us. Waking up at the same time, taking turns showering. Whoever got done first grabbed a coffee for the other.
