Michael Howard

Swansea City 2-1 Cardiff City

Football League Third Division

The Vetch, 22 November 1998

Joining Swansea City from Tranmere Rovers as a teenager, Michael Howard soon made the left side of defence his own and became a staple of the Swans squad during the late nineties. Consistent and dependable, Howard slotted into a formidable defence that was the pride of the club for a few seasons, giving the Swans the confidence to beat clubs such as West Ham in the FA Cup in 1999, and winning the Third Division championship in 2000 – both games Howard played a big part in. While his final years with Swansea were a mixed bag, he contributed in the epic survival match against Hull City in 2003. Although he left for Morecambe in 2004, Howard eventually returned to Swansea to work for the Swans Community Trust.
