Chapter Thirteen

Greyson

I pulled the car up outside the college entrance, glancing around at the mass of students that loitered around the grounds. It was instinctive but not completely unnecessary to make a visual sweep of the area. If I had my own way, I’d have walked her to class too, but Bailey was having none of the bodyguard routine in this part of her life. She was still holding on to whatever independence she could, and part of me found it endearing. Such bravery couldn’t be brushed off or snuffed out.

I gave her a quick smile. “What time shall I pick you up?”

She unbuckled the seat belt and turned in towards me. “You said you weren’t working at the club tonight.”

“I’m not, but I can still pick you up and take you to work.”

“Oh, from Brooklyn?” she said with sarcasm. “During rush hour? Sure you will.”

“It’s no trouble.”

“I already asked Ben to give me a ride.”

I scowled down to her. “Ben’s a DJ. Not security.”

“It’s fine. I’m on his way. Better than getting the subway, right?” She placed her hand on my knee. “I’ll get one of the security guys to bring me back to the hotel after my shift. Besides, you have work to do too. Don’t let me keep you from it.”

“You are it,” I corrected her, smirking.

She rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean.”

We’d had our couple of days off together and spent most of it in bed, whilst I dealt with things over the phone. But we both had to get back to work. Bailey wouldn’t stop for no one. She insisted on taking tonight’s shift after her class, but I wouldn’t be going back to the club just yet. The guys could handle the place fine without me for another night, and I had more important things to do.

I needed to follow up with the police and check Bailey’s place had been secured well enough before she even thought about moving back in. Then there was the case in general. I’d been running through my giant list of potential threats fast, and so far it had been worthless.

Before the robbery, I would have said the whole thing was pointless. There hadn’t been any more attacks or even rumbles of danger since I started working at Dark Neon. But it was different now. Bailey had been hit twice and although it may not have been connected to the murders, it was enough to keep plowing through the named suspects.

And now, someone was smack bang on the top of the list.

Diego Hernández.

“I’ll be back late tonight,” she said, leaning into the back seat for her bag. “If you’re up early enough, do you wanna grab some breakfast?”

“Absolutely.”

She beamed up at me. White pearls framed with lush, plum lips. “Right answer, hired meat.”

How quickly things had changed in just two days. I hadn’t felt this kind of spark in years and even then it was puny and short-lived.

I could see it in her too. She smiled, played, laughed .
