Tromping through Louisiana wetlands, hiking the desert, and backpacking in British Columbia all require different boots, so I’ll briefly discuss a few types and their applications. Leather lace-up boots are probably the most common choice in four-season climates. They can be categorized in several ways, including: moccasin toe, plain toe, insulated and noninsulated, plus rebuildable and non-rebuildable. Manufacturers position each type for a particular market segment. The results are so-called: hiking, hunting, logging, tactical, and work (protective-toe) boots. Can you work in a hiking boot or hike in a logging boot? Yes. What really matters is fit and quality. A great fitting pair of inexpensive boots beats an ill-fitting pair of expensive boots. Rebuildable boots have a Norwegian welt, meaning the sole and upper are stitched together on the outside. Non-rebuildable boots have the sole and upper joined so that removing the sole (to replace it) damages the boot.
