Chapter Thirteen Gabriel tried hard to go on, but he couldn't stop thinking of Nicky. He spent most of his time in a daze. He hoped it wasn't too obvious to anyone else. Renee was deep in wedding plans and oblivious, luckily. He made sure his work was impeccable, even if it took him until midnight. But it wasn't unusual for junior partners, especially fast-track ones like Gabriel, to be at the office all hours of the night. It helped keep his mind off Nicky. For a while, at least.
One Friday evening, around seven, Julian poked his head in Gabriel's office. "I'm officially kidnapping you. It's Friday. There's no court tomorrow. The cleaning people are complaining about you," he said with a grin. "Now put the damn keyboard down and come buy me a drink."
Gabriel tried to protest. Julian was his oldest friend here, and surely he'd figure out there was something up with him. "I've just got a little bit more to do."
"Did it sound like I was asking? Come on. Don't tell me you're not gonna spend most of tomorrow working at home. Whatever it is can wait." He stood in the doorway and folded his arms over his chest. "Don't make me come over there."
Gabriel snickered. "I would say 'make me', but you'd try, then I'd have to hurt you," he said, grinning. Julian was nearly as tall as Gabriel, but not as muscular. He shut down his laptop and sighed. "All right. I am a little hungry." He actually couldn't remember the last time he'd eaten anything that didn't come out of a vending machine. He stood, stretching. His back and shoulders popped alarmingly, and he had to admit to himself that he'd been sitting at his desk a bit too long.
"Good. I know this great little place." Before Gabriel could change his mind, Julian ushered him out and down the elevator to the parking garage. They took Julian's car, and he drove them a dozen blocks down the road, parking in front of a small restaurant with a quaint but busy bar. He got them a table in the corner. "One of the paralegals turned me on to this place last year. It has the most amazing food."
Gabriel's stomach grumbled. "Great, haven't eaten for a while. I think. I need a drink first, though." The waitress came over and they ordered beer and shots of Jager. Gabriel threw back his as soon as it arrived, and ordered another. It burned all the way down, suiting his mood. The subsequent warmth was numbingly good.
Julian tossed back a shot and then took a sip of beer as he looked over the menu. "Yeah, you really do need a night out, don't you, buddy? Been burning the candle at both ends lately."
Gabriel sighed, sipping at his beer. "You don't know the half of it, man." He rubbed his face with his hands. The next round of shots arrived and he wasted no time dispatching his. He was well on his way to getting wasted, and he wasn't about to stop now.
