CHAPTER FIVE

BEING BACK IN REGIE felt surreal. All these kids around me, drinking beer and worrying about this teacher or the other, they seemed so far removed from where I was today. I'd spent most of my student life here, but it had stopped feeling like home a long time ago. The student dorms had been modernized and looked a lot more appealing than when Edi and I had shared a room here. The bars and terraces looked fancier, but the vibe of the place had remained exactly as I remembered it: busy and loud.

I entered the pizzeria and trying to find Călin. It was eleven in the morning, and the place was full. Yup, nothing had changed.

"Sebastian, over here!" Călin stood and waved at me.

"Hey, man. It's so great to see you." I hugged him and patted his back. "You look good. All adult and put together." Călin had always looked like he’d just rolled out of bed in University. Clothes crumpled, hair disheveled, bleary-eyed from all the partying. To see him sharp and fresh faced was a bit of a shock.

He chuckled and shrugged. "Who would've thought, eh?"

We sat at the table, still grinning and drinking each other in. Of my university colleagues, Călin had been my closest friend. We'd kept in touch here and there, but nothing consistent.

"So, what have you been up to?" he asked after we'd given our order.

"I got my Master's degree and I am starting a new full-time job in March. I’ve been working entry-level IT and programming jobs throughout my Master’s, but this one’s different. I’m joining a larger company as a mid-level programmer."

“What are they developing?”

“Lots of different apps and software, mostly for businesses. I’ll be working on a procurement system they’re trying to add to their corporate software suite.”

Călin made a gagging sound. “Boring.”

“The company is great and I can move to a different department in a couple of years,” I said, shrugging.

"Contract signed and all?"

I shook my head. "That's all going to be handled in early March."

"Perfect!" He rubbed his hands together and hurried to grab his beer right off the waiter's tray.

"Man! Drinking before noon. I miss this shit."

Călin had indulged in daytime drinking in University. He'd claimed he needed it to put up with the stupidity of our professors and how antiquated what they taught us was. He'd not been wrong. Most of the teaching methods and programming languages they taught us were useless garbage. Then there were the filler classes that had nothing to do with our career choice. Just thinking about them gave me a headache.

"So tell me, what have you been up to?" I said, sipping from my large coffee. Seeing Călin, I’d had an inkling to get beer, but then I’d remember it wasn’t even noon yet.

"Oh, right! Want a job?" He wiggled his eyebrows at me, his smile turned silly by the beer foam clinging to his upper lip.

"I'm not sure I follow."

He gulped some more and licked the foam away. "I'm starting my own company.
