(152.7) Madhya Pradesh (131.0) Tamil Nadu (84.5) Bihar (54.5) Andhra Pradesh (47.1) and Uttar Pradesh (36.5) all have rates over 30. One can only speculate that the acquisition of non-traditional qualifications by women may place them at increased risk of suicide.

University graduate and higher

The contrast of those with university or postgraduate degrees with diploma holders is a sharp one (Figure 10.9). In only four states do women graduates have suicide rates over 20: Sikkim, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. And only in Kerala is the rate for males over 20. In the majority of states (including Pondicherry) graduate suicide rates are under 10. Once again we can only conjecture why the holders of a university degree should be, relatively speaking, at lower risk.
