The place was absolutely transformed. Streamers, balloons, banners… Our team went all out into creating a rainbow paradise for the kids. Of course, most of it would be taken down by the time the launch was over. But seeing the looks on their faces when they were finally brought in made it all worth it.

Missy had directed the press to the back of the main hall so the kids could get up front to hear Ryan’ speech. I hung back to the side, stealing glances at my mother, who was shooting daggers at my dad across the room. And the whole time, the angry knot in my stomach gave me hell.

“...and that was the injury that changed things for me,” Ryan was saying. He had the kids hanging on to his every word.

“You couldn’t play anymore,” a little boy piped up. One leg in a brace and two months into physio that would get him out of that wheelchair.

Ryan laughed softly and shook his head. “That’s what everyone was telling me, but I wasn’t ready to quit.”

“But your knee…” the boy said, pointing at Ryan’ left leg.

I remember the media uproar that followed his recovery. His determination to get back on the field despite every medical professional telling him it would never happen. My father and I were in the stands the day Ryan ran out in his Giants kit, sporting a full recovery and taking them to win the game. The atmosphere was electric. Every single person there was cheering for him, even supporters of the opposing team.

“It cost me a lot of time and money,” Ryan replied. “Two things that not everybody has. But another thing it cost me, which everyone has—including you guys—is a heart that won’t quit. You have that?”

A few mumbles floated around the fifty or so heads seated in front of him. Ryan frowned at them, hands on his hips.

“I didn’t catch that,” he said, a smile starting on his lips. “Now, I know how hard y’all are working. I heard the stories, don’t try to act shy now. Let me ask you again… Do you have a heart that won’t quit?”

His enthusiasm sent the kids from zero to one hundred, and their cheers resounded as they high-fived each other, and some of them punched the air. Those who could jumped up and held out their arms, showing off imaginary superhero biceps.

I was beginning to understand the fame that had catapulted him into the hearts of everyone—whether they loved football or not. He was charismatic, bold, a fighter, and today… speaking to the kids at their level… I saw Ryan’ tender side. His heart.

“So that’s where my company was born,” Ryan said once the kids had quieted down. “I had time and money, and I wanted to help people with hearts who didn’t quit.”

It didn’t look like the end of his talk, but his words moved everyone—even the reporters gathered in back—to break into heartfelt applause. Pride swelled in my chest, along with something else I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
