Elizabeth Doleâs preparation has served her well. She has given speeches throughout her career, and it has been her anticipation of the event that has made her successful. For example, her speechwriter, Kerry Tymchuk, described a time when Elizabeth was in Poland as secretary of labor, and she knew that she would be attending dinners with dignitaries. Just in case she would be asked to give a toast, she had worked with Kerry to prepare appropriate toasts. He noted that âthe male secretaries were over there stumbling through their remarks, and she has these beautiful toasts memorized. People were crying when she was finished.â[71] Her preparation was ridiculed when Elizabeth Dole was a presidential candidate. The New York Times described Elizabeth as a âcontrolled performer and well-known perfectionist.â[72] Another article noted, âshe displayed a caution with the public and the press, limited her time for casual schmoozing with both.â[73] Another columnist went further; he said, âDole was positively awful as a candidate . . . she rarely ever gave a hint of what we expect of leaders, instead following the down-to-the-second script developed by her aides. Combined with her saccharine delivery, the script failed, if only because all who heard her could tell how exactly scripted she was.â[74] Cartoonist Garry Trudeau lampooned Elizabeth Dole in his âDoonesburyâ strip as a Stepford-like personality who spouts sound bites on command, never varying so much as a semicolon. Ari Fleisher, Doleâs communications director, wondered why men are called âdisciplinedâ and women are âscripted.â[75]
