“He’s asleep, but are you sure I should stay over? What about our parents?” Her nervousness seeped through each question. I hated that my father’s drama crept up in her mind. What Lydia and I shared was beautiful and nobody would make either of us question it. Not if I had a say. Who gave a fuck who our families were? No silly titles would stand in the way of our love.

I’d never been a man to sit back and let life happen all around me, and I didn’t plan to start then either. I was a “grab life by the checkbook and get things done” kinda guy, and I wouldn’t wimp out now that the most important decisions of my life stared me in the face.

“Lydia,” I said, running my thumb across her chin and bringing her face closer. “Fuck our parents. My dad is just pissed because he understood this thing between us is serious.” My father and I may have our differences, but his parenting isn’t one of them. Sure, he wasn’t around all the time, but I had the best of everything. People might think that made him a bad father, but over the years I’d looked at our relationship differently. Rafferty was a good dad while I was growing up and he was married to my mother. He worked hard managing a Fortune 500 company and providing for his family. The man taught me everything he knew, which is why he realized I’d never give up on Lydia.

“We’re serious?” she asked ever hopeful.

I placed a small soft kiss on her lips and smiled. “Deadly serious.”

More than likely my father recognized the look in my eyes and realized I wouldn’t stand back and wait to claim Lydia as mine. There’d be no time for prenups and all the other crap he liked to let ruin his relationships. It would just be me and her forever. Lydia would never leave me because there wouldn’t be a reason. I’d make sure she was the happiest woman on the planet for the rest of her life. She wouldn’t even consider divorce, so I didn’t need to worry about the trivial things my father allowed to consume the better half of his life.

“The only person I’m worried about right now is you.” I brought her close again, but as she expected a kiss on the lips, I moved mine to her cheek and grabbed her hand, setting off toward the bedroom. “The only people you ever need to worry about from here on out are me and Leopold. We’re a family now.”

“We are?” she asked, still uncertain but following me into the hallway.

I nodded. I’d plan to show her how much she meant to me for the rest of our evening.

We made it to my bedroom, and I closed the door behind her as she stood in front of the bed. “I want to see all of you, Lydia. Take off your shirt.”

With a deep swallow she listened, raising the hem from her belly to her shoulders and over her head.
