Chapter 6

Sadie and Palmer sat through dinner with John and his mother Betty, hearing Betty talk about John as a child, John in high school, and John coming back to stay. When dinner was over, and Sadie left at the same time Palmer left; they both gave a sigh of relief.

John quickly walked out to Sadie before she took off and said, “About today and my mother…”

“Hey, it’s okay,” Sadie said. “I think Palmer and I have what we need to solve this case, but I just want to make sure so I need to come back to your offices tomorrow.”

“Sure,” John said. “I really appreciate you for everything you’re doing. I know you’re so busy and all. Palmer told me how successful you are as a chef, and that you run multiple stores yourself. Not only that, but you have a record of solving the most challenging cases very quickly. I just thought you owned one bakery store in Fortune Falls when you first told me you have a store in Fortune Falls. Sorry, I must sound so condescending.”

Sadie laughed. “No, not at all. You didn’t know.”

“You should have just told me. Brag about yourself more. If you don’t blow your own horn, I wouldn’t know. I like a strong confident woman.”

“Really?” Sadie said. “I didn’t know. So that’s your type.”

“To think about it,” John said. “I don’t have a type. I just know who I like.”

“Oh?” Sadie said.

“Yes,” John said. “I just wished I knew it earlier…” John leaned in closer to Sadie as she closed her eyes.

Sadie had always known who John Fellows was in high school since he was the star athlete. She even had a bit of a crush on him, like most girls in school. Now here he was, wanting to kiss her.

Perhaps after all this time, John Fellows was the guy that she was supposed to be with, to fall in love with and live happily ever after with.

It must be fate that John had returned back to Fortune Falls to stay right when Sadie had decided to settle down in her family home after her mother moved to New York City.

She pulled back before John’s lips can touch hers. “John,” she asked. “Are you happy to be back in Fortune Falls?”

John smiled. “I am now. Since you’re here, Sadie.”

“But are you happy to be back in town to be doing what you’re doing, living here?”

John shrugged. “It’s my circumstance. Also my fate as the only child in the Fellows family. If it wasn’t for my Uncle Joe dying and my father falling into a near coma, I probably would have still stayed abroad and lived a life as an Art History Professor.”

Sadie nodded and said, “I see.”

“But Sadie,” John said, “Now that I see what I had been missing all this time, I’m happy to be back. If you find the right person, she’s worth moving half way around the globe to be with. And Sadie, being with you today, well…”

Sadie smiled and said, “You haven’t seen me at my worst.
