Chapter 13

“I can’t wait to get into the water,” Eva said as Grace dragged their bags into their hotel suite (she wouldn’t let Eva carry anything even a short distance), thanking the bellhop or whatever he was called for bringing them this far. “I got a new maternity swimsuit just for this trip!”

“Ooo, is it a bikini?” asked Grace. “I don’t have a bikini, but I brought the sexiest one-piece I could find, just for your enjoyment!”

Eva grinned. “I can’t wait to see you in it! I brought a bikini for the beach and a one-piece for the pool.”

“Good, go put the bikini on! Let’s get out on the beach while the sun is still shining.”

Grace nosed around the suite before getting changed herself. Eva’s thirty-seventh birthday was this weekend, so they had taken some time off to enjoy a few days at the beach together. Eva had insisted on flying out to some historic five-star oceanside hotel she had visited as a child. Their suite was beautiful. It had enormous windows on three sides, offering expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and the hotel’s private beach. There was a dining area with a table for four, one of those long armchairs where your feet were stretched out in front of you (Eva would know what that was called), and a bay window with a built-in seat (Grace ran over and sat in the seat for a few seconds as soon as she saw it, just so she could say she had). There was also a roomy desk, which was good since Eva had brought her laptop so she could work on that book she was writing.

Next to the desk was a door going out onto a private verandah overlooking the beach. It was nice and roomy and had a few chairs and comfy loungers. Across from this was a big fancy wet bar thing with an array of fancy alcoholic beverages. They must not have realized a pregnant lady would be staying in this room, Grace thought, closing the cabinet doors so Eva wouldn’t have to see what she was missing. She wandered over to the living room area, where a couch and some armchairs were clustered around a fireplace. There was another bay window over here, and a door leading onto a second verandah! Damn, Eva did not hold back. This verandah was on a different side of the hotel, but you could still see the ocean.

Grace went back in and entered the bedroom, where she assumed they would be spending a lot of time. Here there was a king-sized bed, a second fireplace, and another door going out onto the side verandah. There was also a rather unusual feature: a pair of large bifold doors opening onto the bathroom. The whirlpool tub was right on the other side of the doors, so it was practically in the bedroom when they were open. She could see Eva standing in the bathroom, wearing her blue maternity bikini and some sort of gauzy coverup thing, looking apprehensively at her reflection.
