Marcus: Got a surprise for you. Be ready.

Lexi: Ready how? Naked ready?

Marcus: Keep your phone close.

Lexi scratched her head and went back to reading the script.

“Like, OMG he’s so annoying. He’s like a walking hemorrhoid. At least he’s hot.” Lexi read the line and rolled her eyes with a groan. “Man, I don’t know how much more of this I can take.” Her phone rang. It wasn’t a number she recognized. She wondered if this was what Marcus was talking about.

“This is Lexi.”

“Lexi Ember?”

“Yes.”

“This is Sheila Patrick, I’m with StarCast at Plumbline Studios.”

Lexi sat up straight. “Oh hi, Sheila! What a pleasure. What can I do for you?”

“I have a script that I’d like you to have a look at.”

“Wonderful!” God, if it’s another one of these fucking bimbo roles, I will scream.

“It’s a little different from what you normally do, but I think you’ll like it. It’s a romance-drama. Marcus Hemming insisted we contact you.”

“Marcus did?”

“Yes. He’s our lead. We’ve been going through supporting actresses, but he wants you.”

“Is that so?” YES! Marcus, you beautiful bastard! “So will this be the usual audition format?”

“Not exactly. We want you to come in and test with Marcus and Mr. Stone to see if the fit is right.”

Lexi’s heart stopped in her chest. “S-Stone? Not . . . Stanley Stone. Is it?” She gripped the arm of her couch so hard she almost broke a nail.

“Yes. He’s directing and wants to see your chemistry with Marcus.”

Fuuuuhhhhhck!

“Ms. Ember?”

Lexi pulled herself down from the ceiling and forced herself to speak. “Yes, sorry. I’m here.”

“If you’re interested, I’ll send you the script.”

Lexi fought hyperventilating. “I’m very interested.”

“Good, what’s your email?”

Lexi told Sheila, and they ended the call. Her dazed brain had zeroed out and all she heard was a high frequency tone in her head and her heart pounding. The phone slid from her hand onto the floor.

“Stanley motherfucking Stone. No fucking way,” she whispered in her shock. Then she launched from her couch, sending the script with the role for bimbo-number-four flying off her lap. She shouted to her apartment. “Stanley motherfucking Stone! NO FUCKING WAY!” She screamed and jumped around.

“This is IT! Ohmygod, ohmygod, OHMYGOD!” She calmed down enough to call Maddie. The two of them squealed and celebrated over the phone. Lexi wanted to go out and celebrate, but Maddie had to work soon. Lexi called Marcus next.

“Well?” he asked as he answered the call. “What do you think?”

“Oh my God, Marcus! You’re incredible! You’re beautiful! I’m so excited!”

“Now remember, I can only set it up. You have to knock it down. Stone’s got an eye for chemistry and talent. If he doesn’t think you have it, he’ll find someone else. And even though he’s kind of a friend, he won’t use you if you don’t deliver.”

Lexi was breathing so heavily she was almost dizzy. “Okay, yeah. So, no pressure. I hear ya. I’m gonna knock his socks off!”

Marcus laughed. “Yeah, well, be careful with that, too. He’s got a reputation.”

“Oh, I know.
