Chapter Seventeen

Archer kept far enough back on the highway he was sure they hadn’t noticed him following. His bright red sports car stuck out, and if he got too close, there was no way they wouldn’t see him. But he figured he was safe to trail behind and let a few cars get between them.

The nagging voice in the back of his mind told him he should have mentioned this little road trip to Christopher. Ever since his brother had arrived home it had become abundantly clear he didn’t want Archer even remotely involved in the Cooper and Lou situation.

About as much as Lou had made it clear she would rather see him dead than be alone with him.

Nothing about this was going the way Archer had planned. The Cooper debacle wasn’t supposed to be this hard. He’d seen the way Christopher had handled Jeremy, and though he didn’t agree with how his mother had dealt with Lou’s father, she never seemed taxed by it. This was meant to come naturally to the Wyatts, and somehow he was coming up short of the family expectations.

But Cooper wasn’t supposed to find a friend. He wasn’t meant to have allies. He was only ever supposed to fly under the radar until the time came for him to run off into the woods with his tail between his legs.

Why couldn’t Ariel have waited another year to kill Devon Whittaker? If Lou had arrived after Cooper was already in his furry form, none of these problems would have popped up in the first place.

Archer sighed. He was tired of pretending the Lou thing didn’t bother him. Around his mother and Christopher he was playing the aloof dick who couldn’t care less what one witch thought of him. But he did care. Sure, it was terrible of him to use his powers on her. And worse still he’d only started to spend time with her to lure her away from Cooper.

He didn’t deserve her, and he knew that perfectly well, but all the same he wanted her. And it wasn’t because he couldn’t have her.

There was more to it. He liked her. He liked her a lot more than he’d ever expected he could. Watchers weren’t meant to get directly involved. It was their duty to guide the Reynolds men and the Whittakers, and to make sure the curse was maintained for the better good of the town.

A Watcher wasn’t supposed to get their hands quite as dirty as Archer had managed to.

And they definitely weren’t supposed to have feelings, real feelings, for anyone involved. His mother had tried to drive that into his head because she’d been involved with Lou’s father.

“Protect yourself,” she’d told him. She wasn’t talking about safe sex. “Guard your heart. They’ll get to you in more ways than you could ever be prepared for, and it has nothing to do with magic. Be careful.”

It was the closest Ariel had ever come to offering him real maternal advice.

Advice he’d completely ignored.

Sure, Lou had every right to hate him.
