CHAPTER TWELVE

Trixie

Sunday morning, I was dragging. I’d obviously pushed my luck getting home so late, and then making out with Spike for close to an hour before he reluctantly left me.

I managed to make it down to the garage before my parents came looking for me (because, god forbid I drove myself), having managed to remember my Bible this time. I did not, however, have time for coffee, so I had to force myself not to yawn. The effort meant my eyes were watery and my nose was slightly runny.

My parents did not greet me, my mother gave me the once-over with her ‘discerning’ look, then slid into the front passenger seat just before I slid into the back.

I felt like I was crawling out of my skin as we pulled into the church parking lot, and I had a quick daydream of running away. I wondered how far I’d get in a skirt and wedges, but knew I was being overly dramatic… plus, I probably wouldn’t even make it around the block before I dropped dead from the effort.

I followed behind my parents as we headed inside and I heard my mother hiss slightly under her breath, “What is he doing here?”

I followed her line of sight to see Spike leaning against the brick wall, his hand holding his cell phone, two cups of coffee in the other.

I let out an internal squeak and rushed past my parents to meet him. “What are you doing here?”

He grinned, sliding his phone into his pocket before handing me one of the coffees. “Well, I figured you came to my place last night, met my friends and family, it’s only fair I come to you.”

“But it’s church.”

“Baby, I’d go to hell if it meant I was with you.”

I bit my lip. “I want to kiss you so bad right now.”

He chuckled. “Same.”

My parents arrived and my father bristled as he reluctantly held his hand out to Spike. “Spike. Glad to see you at church. I hope the Lord speaks to you, clearly, this morning.”

Spike shook his hand and nodded. “Looking forward to the spiritual enlightenment, pastor.”

I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing.

My mother plastered a fake smile on her face and slid her hand into the crook of my father’s arm. “We should get inside.”

“We’ll see you both in there,” Daddy said, and led my mother away.

“Hi,” I breathed out.

“Hey, baby.” He glanced over my head, then leaned down to kiss me quickly. “How was your morning?”

“Good now.” I held up my coffee. “How did you know I needed this?”

He tapped his temple. “I can read your mind.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Well, that’s terrifying.”

He laughed. “Oh, I know.”

“Last chance to save yourself.”

“It’s us against the world, baby.” He held his hand out to me. “You with me?”

I linked my fingers with his and nodded. He raised our hands to his lips, kissing the back of mine before we headed inside.

I led him down the aisle to our family pew only to find my mother had blocked off the seats beside her with programs.
