Of course sunny Rome was out of the question.

The best Noah could do under the circumstances was to retreat to his room while the sounds of the circus resumed on the floor below. Crashes and hammering followed by shouting male and female voices continued to wreck havoc on the nerves. Outside the rain pelted down with its own distracting rhythm, as if it were trying to drown out the taped opera music wavering up through the old house in spurts and starts, interspersed with cursing and more crashes.

Noah sat in the middle of the bed going through sheet music in an effort to select something to play. He tossed aside some of the longer pieces thinking that he might not be able to handle them, and disregarded others because he thought 248

the crowd might not be able to sit quietly after having suffered...endured the Aida performance.

They were probably more accustomed to Barry's style of music in any case. In the end he chose the Canzonetta from Violin Concerto in D by Tchaikovsky for the pleasure it gave him, and Autumn from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi because of its variety and obvious tie in with an autumn festival. He could play each piece from memory and practically everyone knew Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky.

With that chore accomplished, Noah decided against practicing while the house was filled with noise and music. He considered going for a walk but he really did not want to ruin his new boots mucking through the bog left by the rains. All that was left was for him to go down and join in the fray.

Upon exiting his room, Noah heard Dora's voice booming over the music below and he chose the rear stairs out of sheer cowardice. He cut through the kitchen, finding Mary Katherine sitting in a rocking chair near a small fire in the huge hearth, her knitting needles clicking at a rapid clip. Rose Marie was there too, sipping from a tea cup and flipping through a fashion magazine at the old table. Neither woman noticed him until he was well into the room, no doubt because they could not hear him over the noise, even though it was far quieter in the rear of the house than the front.

"Goodness, you startled me," Rose Marie said with a start that almost spilled her tea. "I thought you were out front with the others."

"Got better sense, I should think," Mary Katherine said with a smile. Her needles kept up their pace without her 249

looking at them. "After this lot, Mr. Bainbridge's music will seem like a heavenly choir."

"What can we get for you, dear?" Rose asked. She seemed to have taken a liking to Noah after the incident with Ester.

"Some tea perhaps? I would offer earplugs, but alas you must suffer with the lot of us as there are none."

Noah smiled and sat down in a chair across the table from Rose. "Some tea would be nice.
