Potosi and the Exploitation of Silver

It is difficult to overstate the impact of the exploitation of silver in the Americas, the metal flooding Europe, a continent considerably wealthier as a result, trade flows between Europe, the New World, and the Far East on a global scale for the first time in history. Silver, the symbol of the sudden extraordinary wealth of Spain, was in its majority minted in Potosi, the city quickly becoming one of the biggest and richest in the world.

As Molina (2009a) explains, the myth of Potosi, unlike that of El Dorado, itself only a fantasy, originated in reality. It is precisely the vivid reality of what was experienced by the Spaniards and Indians, albeit in drastically different ways, that allowed the myth to have such a powerful and long-lasting impact on Bolivian identity. Three fundamental aspects of the exploitation of silver, all relating to the conditions under which the fabulous wealth was created, particularly stand out. These are:
