Chapter 15: Crossing Paths

The next day they tidy up, check out and catch the Waiheke passenger ferry back over to Auckland, stopping at their favourite inner-city golden sand paradise, Kohimarama Beach. All three, even Clara, jump into the tide and enjoy a high-tide swim; Freya swims out to her two white buoys and back to shore again.

They stay the night at a B&B in nearby Mission Bay where they take it easy. They walk around the bays and get takeaway fish and chips to eat on the beach, although Freya ends up feeding most of them to the resident seagulls.

Noticing Clara is not too upbeat, Freya asks, “What’s up Flat White? You have been very quiet today.”

“I’m torn Freya, on the one hand Martin lives so close by, but he’s out of bounds, and on the other hand I’ve really been thinking about Sven and your words,” Clara explains.

Sven turns and looks at their friend, “Which words were those Flat White?”

“About how an affair could mean I lose the best man I’ve ever had,” Clara clarifies.

“You know we are only looking out for you, but whatever you choose Flat White, we will be there for you,” Freya makes clear.

“Damn right there! We just don’t want to see you hurt Flat White,” Sven supports.

“I’ve still got a lot of thinking to do, but thanks, you two are the best,” Clara says with a tear in her eye.

“Come on, let’s get back as we have an early start!” Sven urges.

They order a taxi for their early start on the ‘red-eye’ domestic flight from Auckland back to Wellington Airport, when they get back to the B&B.

Monday comes soon enough, and the plane touches down in Wellington just before 7.30am. As the trio emerge from the concourse, they see Zac striding towards his plane’s departure gate.

“Well fancy seeing you here, Zac,” Freya says, a little too casually.

“Hey Fin, hey girls! How was Waiheke? No doubt you all got up to a ton of mischief, I can’t wait to hear the tales!” Zac replies as he hugs and kisses each of the girls in turn.

Sven bats her eyelashes. “Who, us innocent wee things? Why, what sort of girls do you think we are, Zac?” she says, feigning innocence.

Clara squeezes Zac’s biceps. “Hmm big boy, we could have got up to all sorts of trouble if you were on the island...” she teases, in a deep husky voice.

“Oh, I can believe that Flat White!” Zac replies, enjoying the girls’ banter. “Come on, quit horsing around and I’ll buy you all a coffee and catch you up on Portobello before you race off to your high-powered government positions.”

Zac’s plane is delayed, and Sven and Clara wait for the coffees while Freya takes advantage of the delay to chat with Zac. They take a seat around a high table near the window looking across the tarmac towards the main runway. “Good news, Fin,” says Zac. “I’ve managed to get the council’s earthquake red sticker removed.”

“Wow! That’s fabulous news,”
