Chapter Sixteen

"So, how did you get involved in the insurance industry?" Grey asked as they strolled down the cool, air-conditioned hall back to the resort.

A woman in a designer bathing suit of white and gold stomped by like a runway model from Milan. Bernice realized her face looked familiar enough, she probably was, but was pleased to see that Grey's eyes didn't even flicker once to check her out.

His question caught her a little off guard, though. Bernice shrugged, trying to blow it off in an easy, breezy manner.

"You're avoiding my question," he pressed.

Bernice was not entirely sure how much more to open up to him about her life. "Fell into it, really."

"And I repeat, you're avoiding the question," he laughed.

She sighed. She batted a palm front from one of the plants as they passed. "Well, it isn't exactly what I wanted to do."

"And what exactly did you want to do?"

She tapped her fingernails on her teeth before admitting, "I wanted to be a dancer."

Grey gave her a long look up and down. "I could see that as being a possibility. What made you quit your dream?"

"The realities of it," she replied. "When you are staring into a future with six-figures of tuition debt, you tend to have to look for jobs that will allow you to make those payments. I got a summer job as a claims investigator. Helped me go to law school. Floyd—"

"That's your ex?"

Bernice remembered suddenly that she had yet to come up with that story. Floyd's name would work as good as any, and would be easy enough to remember for her cover. "Yes. We went into business together. We are... still in business together."

Grey gave a low whistle. "That was who texted you. Gotta be rough."

"We work it out."

"Hats off to you." He gave her an encouraging grin. "I like it when two people can stay friends after things fall apart. Takes real grownups to see past the lies and deceit, and really just wish the best for each other."

Bernice really wanted to change the subject from anything regarding lies and deceit. "I'm hungry. Are you hungry? We should go eat."

Grey took the cue. He glanced around as if trying to figure out where they should go. His face brightened as he thought of a place. "Sure, but let's not hang around this overpriced joint. What'dya say you let me show you around this godforsaken island? I know this great little place down the beach."

"Yes?" she asked, intrigued.

"Sure! You're going to love it! Go grab your stuff. I'll meet you in the lobby."

She smiled and then sauntered towards her room.

Grey watched her go, a cheerful smile plastered across his face, but the moment she was out of sight, his face relaxed into concern. There was something not right about her stories. He couldn't put his finger on it. He hated that feeling. Even worse, he hated that her dishonesty might mean she found herself in some hot water, and not of the hot tub kind.
