Chapter Twenty-Two

“Having fun yet?” Ramon teased Rachel. He slipped a Modelo Light inside a purple beer hugger and held out the can to her. Shirtless as he was, the midday sun perfectly highlighted the bulging muscles in his broad shoulders and the skull tattoo. His bronzed chest was hard, buff, and smooth. His body reminded Rachel of hard steel encased in soft, caramel satin. His only visible body hair was a black patch that began in a line halfway down his chiseled abdomen, swirled around his belly button, and disappeared in a teasing trail under his navy swim trunks.

Rachel cocked her brow and reached for the Modelo Light. “You call this fun? You people are crazy.”

Ramon tilted his head back with a shout of spontaneous, instant laughter. “Ha! You haven’t seen anything yet! Don’t be afraid. Come on over with rest of us. This is going to be an adventure!” As he walked away from the center boat deck and joined the rest of the group, the muscles in his back rippled.

Rachel took a long sip, hoping the ice cold beer would settle her nerves. Her stomach flipped low in her belly. Her insides churned right along with the frothy sea. When Ramon had invited her to come today as a reward for the good job she’d been doing lately, she’d of course accepted the invitation. She’d assumed it would be a cheerful outing, like the previous boat excursion. A way to get closer to her “new boss,” solidify her cover, and mingle with the rest of the crew in a fun, relaxed setting.

Not to mention the real reason she came—the opportunity to see Monica again.

Yet never in a million years had she anticipated a shark hunting expedition. Had she known that, not only would she have told Ramon no, but hell no.

Their group was small. In addition to Rachel, there was Ramon, Monica, Sergio and Juan Felipe of course, and some other guy she’d met the last time named Alberto, who she thought she also recognized from the party.

They all appeared to be having a great time, but oh my God, the setting was anything but relaxed.

She swallowed hard. Rachel was usually comfortable around water and in a boat. She’d lifeguarded as a teenager, and Samantha’s dad had even taught her how to drive their ski boat at the lake. Ordinarily she was fearless when it came to trying new things, but her daredevil mentality did NOT extend to sailing out into the Gulf of Mexico and enticing man-eaters lurking just below the water’s surface. Not at all.

While the adventure seekers and danger lovers peered over the side of the boat as Ramon poured buckets of a disgusting bloody mixture of fish parts that he called chum into the ocean, she hung back and watched from a distance.

“There are sharks all in these waters, Rachel.” Ramon called out to her. “Last month I caught a twelve foot tiger shark in this exact spot. When we cut him open there was a pair of men’s size eleven boots in his stomach.
