Chapter Eighteen – Shopping
Waking up in Taiko’s large bed is becoming a routine – if four days can constitute a routine. To my own surprise, I don’t just enjoy the convenience of not having to move to my own bed after sex in the evenings but also his presence during the night. Maybe my reluctance to share a bed at the Academy was only about wanting enough room to feel comfortable while I sleep and not, as I thought, about feeling suffocated by him.
What I certainly don’t enjoy is waking up alone every time. For starters, I like having sex in the morning – with another person. It’s not something I’ve experienced more than half a dozen times before I met Taiko, but since then it has become a habit I really hate missing out on. On top of that, his absence nowadays also heralds a long, empty day ahead of me.
I’ve been granted permission to attend school, but today there’s a council meeting. To be frank, I wasn’t aware that there even is a council. I assumed that the Supreme Master does what his name suggests: rule supreme. But apparently such a thing exists and since Taiko’s finished his spree, he now has a place on it. He was full of nervous energy last night, which he attempted to alleviate with plenty of sex. I certainly don’t have any complaints about that.
As I’m staring at the ceiling carvings, I realise that I’m looking forward to his return in the evening. It was never like this at the Academy. There, each of us had our own classes and coming together afterwards was caused by sharing a room. Okay, fine, I usually sought him out as soon as class finished, but that was because I wanted to keep an eye on him. I considered it part of my assignment.
Here, I really don’t need to look after the lad. I’ve never seen anyone so well protected. Kaylin is his constant companion as much as Soren is mine. It’s only when we’re in our own rooms that we’re alone and even there I get the impression that before my arrival on the scene, Kaylin was present pretty much permanently. I wonder how Taiko can stand it. I long for solitude already. Just to be allowed to go into town on my own would please me no end. Hell, at this point I would settle for a solitary walk in the garden.
But what I crave the most is his company. However pleasant Soren is, he’s still only there because he’s under orders. Whenever I meet someone – anyone – I’m more and more aware that they only speak to me because they have to. And even though no one seems to look at me more than is strictly necessary, I feel watched all the time. There’s an almost palpable collective mistrust. Taiko is the only one who wants me here. It’s no wonder that my heart wants to soar whenever I see him.
After my breakfast, Soren takes me to the library.
