Yushima had worked for a number of years before getting married, but at her husband’s request had quit her job. “He said, ‘We can make it with my salary, please quit your job.’” Yet, his attempt to become the sole breadwinner of the family and earn respect as a husband failed miserably, as he could not get along with colleagues and did not make an attempt to pursue other work. Frustrated about his situation, he also became violent toward his family. Yushima remembers:

He drank quite a lot, became stressed, and started to become violent toward the children…. He had no place to let off his stress, so he bullied the children.… It would not be good for the children, for myself as well, to continue living like that. Under these circumstances, divorce was the only option.
