THE NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL

Vanguard Records was best known in the folk boom for issuing live recordings of the Newport Folk Festival. Starting in 1959 and continuing into the twenty-first century (in spite of a very long hiatus), the Newport Folk Festival has been both a representation and product of the popularity of folk music in the United States. In its first three years, guitar sales increased 500 percent, and in folk music’s heyday of the midsixties, the Newport Folk Festival staged pinnacle folk music popularizers (a.k.a. citybillies) such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez (whose career was more or less launched at Newport) alongside protest groups like the Freedom Singers and traditional acts like Doc Watson and Maybelle Carter.45 For the increasing numbers of folk aficionados, the Newport Festival became a mecca. For those who concerned themselves with defining and shaping folk music, Newport became a hall of contention, echoing earlier conflicts about folk music.
