CHAPTER 11

Nat is distant from me. I know I fucked up at the family dinner, but I still stand by what I said. I believe her parents should know the truth about her, darkness and all.

Unfortunately, Nat doesn’t see it that way. So, she’s decided to punish me with no sex and no talking.

That’s fine. I need to focus on Romeo anyway.

I’ve had an idea permeating for a while—ever since Romeo first declared war on me by grabbing Nat off the street.

I know Angelo had a daughter. That didn’t impact me at all when I decided to kill him. He came after me and needed to die.

Now, Angelo’s daughter is in Romeo’s care. Which I know because I’ve been keeping my men on him. I never planned to get kids involved but plans change.

Romeo’s niece—Isabella—is only four years old. If I take her, it will piss off Romeo, and he’ll attack, giving me a chance to strike back and kill him.

I haven’t told Nat my plan yet. With things being the way they are at the moment, she might not like my plan. I’m going to kidnap a four-year-old. Not my best moment in life, but you have to do what you have to do to win a war.

I leave Nat for the day, still sulking, as I head into work, where I put the plan into motion.

I go to work and wait for the call that Romeo has left his house. Once he does, I’ll sneak in, grab Isabella, and take her to my home. I won’t hurt the kid. I’ll just keep her long enough for Romeo to do something stupid.

I spend time going through data sheets until I get the call. “He’s left, sir,” my guy Enzo tells me.

“Great.” I inform my receptionist that I’ll be leaving for the day, then drive to Romeo’s house. Of course, he has guards everywhere. Which is why I came prepared with backup.

I call Enzo. “Ok. I’ll take the guard out front and any others who get in my way. Back me up.”

“You got it, sir.”

I stroll up to Romeo’s house like I own the place. The guard out front pauses then stands up straighter when he realizes who I am.

“Stop right there,” he calls out.

I check to make sure no one else is on the street—it’s empty—then pull my gun out and shoot him in the head. Thank god for silencers. The guard falls with a soft thud, dead. I step over him and keep walking.

Another guard comes running from the side, but Enzo, stationed in the building across the street with a rifle, shoots him. The guard falls next to his fallen comrade.

Even though I can’t see Enzo from where I am, I nod toward the building he’s in. Then, I keep moving.

I’m able to get inside the house with ease. My heart beats steadily, even though there’s a thrill coursing through me. I love the hunt. It’s the best thing about being in the mafia.

As I stalk through the house like I own it, a man comes racing out, firing a gun at me.
