Drenched sheets wound around my body. I twisted and groaned, peeling them off. The nightmare pulsed through my mind and I gripped my hair, pulling on the long strands, like the pain would bring me back to the present and erase the memories. The terror eased, but it didn’t pass. 5:00 am flashed on the clock. I showered and was zipping up my slacks when my phone rang. It had been a while since I’d seen the familiar number.

“Joe? What’s going on?”

“They’re at Magnet. Came in about ten minutes ago.” Joe, one of my surveillance guys, had watched the elite spot for months.

“How many?”

“All three brothers. Plus their sons, Donaldson, and his guests as well. I called you at once but couldn’t get through, so I called Julian as well. He’s on his way.”

“Good. Thanks. Let me know if they leave.”

I changed into jeans and a sweater and hurried downstairs. The ten-minute brisk walk down 5th Avenue to Magnet, the exclusive billionaire club, burned in my lungs and cleared my head.

“Good morning, Mr. Silver. The usual?” Walter unfastened the red barrier rope, and I passed through.

“Good morning, Walter. Just a coffee and a private booth.”

“Your brother is already here. Follow me, please.”

Walter had worked at the club for three decades. Few knew this, but my uncle Jacob got him the job, and Walter’s allegiance to the Silvers never faltered. He knew everyone and anyone who passed through Magnet’s front door. He led me to Julian’s table, where I lowered my hand to his shoulder and leaned in closer. “Turn off the hallway cameras by the bathrooms.”

He gave me a brief nod. “Sir, there was a new woman here.”

“Who?”

He kinked his head. “It wasn’t my shift, and no one logged her. Someone erased the cameras.”

The fucking log books were useless. No one had signed in since the nineties, myself included.

“Anything else?”

“She never spoke. Just listened and observed.”

“Would you recognize her?”

“I never saw her face, sir. She wore an oversized hat and long gloves; showed barely any skin. Very elegant.”

“Thank you.”

I slipped in past the curtain to the booth, where Julian had started a pot of coffee.

“Morning. Looks like a fucking godfather meeting in there.” He poured me a cup and slid it my way.

“That’s the least of our worries. There’s a new bitch in town, and he’s smoother than Hartley and Martinez combined.”

“No names?”

“Not yet. Hartley’s fucking planning a new exchange, but I have no details. I called in a new team, but I have a feeling he’s trying to distract us. Also, Wright is missing from his apartment.”

“Shit.”

“But guess where he’s at?” He slid his phone my way with a screenshot.

“Working with Hartley?”

“Donaldson got him in on a trade. It’s a perfect set up. If he shows. James is in as well. The prosthetic looks great. We got him in set up as a seller and a buyer.”

“Good.”

“You’re hesitant.”

“I need to tell Allie Wright could be there, but if I do—”

“She’ll run?”

“I don’t know.” I cracked my neck from one side to the other.
