. . . . .

After Meg slid into the truck and gingerly shut its contrary door, she looked back into the café. Father and daughter stood at the counter, probably ordering her some dinner. Meg didn’t start the truck right away, just sat and looked through the plate-glass window. And looked some more. Then, as if aware he was being watched, Ty turned partway around, one hand still on the counter. He scanned the room, then beyond, until finally, his eyes met hers. He smiled.

Knowing he was still looking at her, Meg turned the key and let the truck rumble to life.

So...he went to Johns Hopkins University? As a psych major no less. And now he’s a cop? How did that happen? But he had to be really, really smart...and an athlete, too. The whole Greek ideal of fortitudo and sapientia—strength and wisdom. Oy! He was soooo far out of her league. Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.

Her truck threatened to stall, so she goosed the gas a little.

And what about his choice of candy, that Skor. A subliminal message about his end game? Maybe. But then again, sometimes a Skor was just a candy bar.

“Onward, faithful companion,” she said to Rocinante. “Grading awaits.”
