BRIAN LISTENED incredulously as Derek explained what Tommy had told him. He would have said it was ludicrous if he wasn’t living with an honest-to-God werewolf. Magic scrolls didn’t seem to be too far-fetched compared to that.
“So what do we do? What can we do?” Brian asked.
“I’m calling my pack. I’ll discuss it with them. In the meantime, we need to act normal. You need to go to work. The kid seems to trust me, but I can’t risk him running off.”
“Or the Knights finding him first.”
“Right.”
Brian sat in his car, thinking. Darcy was deemed well enough to go home by the EMT, and a cop drove her. With some TLC, Butch would be fine in a week or so. The museum was still cordoned off, but many of the police and onlookers had left. The media were currently doing a story just outside the yellow tape.
It was nearly five in the morning.
“You’re going to hunt them.” It wasn’t a question.
The pause on the other end indicated Derek was choosing his words carefully.
“Baby—”
Brian closed his eyes. “I get it. I do. We can’t get the police involved, and it’s either hunt or be hunted. Could they follow his trail? Or your trail from the park?”
“I’m not sure. I didn’t sense anyone else in the park or on the way home, and neither did the dogs. It’s either lie low and wait for them to attack or go on the offensive. And we still don’t know what happened to Stacey. We have to work under the assumption she escaped and is at the rendezvous place she and Tommy picked. But it’s too dangerous to meet up with her. We could end up leading the Knights right to the scroll.”
Brian sighed, his gut clenching tighter and tighter. He realized the hand holding his phone was trembling.
“I’d feel better if your pack was backing you up.”
“They’ll be here. I’m going to call them after we hang up.”
“I love you.”
Derek’s voice turned thick. “I love you too, Brian.”
They hung up, and Brian started his car to head home. He was in a daze as he took familiar streets, weaving through traffic. He arrived home, parked his car in the driveway, and walked slowly to the front door. Everything had been fine yesterday. Derek had rejoined the world, they were going to plan their wedding, and Derek’s family was coming. Things had been looking up, life had been moving forward. Now what? Had they just been sucked into a war?
Brian fumbled with his keys, his fingers oddly stiff. He finally managed to open the door and stepped inside, instantly greeted by their dogs and Tinker. He couldn’t smile. He shut the door and petted a few of them before turning into the living room, where Tommy sat looking pale and shaken.
Brian snapped back to reality, his daze suddenly gone. It would be so easy to resent Tommy for bringing this danger to their doorstep. But that just wasn’t who he was. Brian had been called a nurturer, which was why he was so good at his job.
