Chapter Nine

Jake wiped the bar and tended to the last few glasses which he’d yet to pick up on his last go-round. His day had been long, too long. All he wanted was to get in his truck, drive home, and crawl into bed.

He’d barely slept in the past few days since the night he’d kicked Matt out of his house and out of his life. Even though he couldn’t fall asleep to save his life, his exhaustion was catching up to him and he barely could keep his eyes open.

Luckily all his patrons hadn’t stayed too late tonight. There were only a few regulars who had graced the double doors of The Bear’s Den this evening, but after a beer or two they all filed out and were on their way. Normally he would stay open until eleven o’clock on a weeknight, but at a quarter after ten, and with no signs of anyone coming in, he was ready to call it a night.

He had just taken the last few glasses back to the kitchen when he heard the bell chime above the doors.

“Sorry. We’re closing early tonight. Come back tomorrow,” he shouted from the back room.

“I’m not here for a beer. This is official FBI business. We’d like to have a word with the owner.”

Jake’s ears perked up at not just the words he’d heard, but the seriousness in the man’s voice. Everyone around here had a lazy, almost country twang to their voice. The man in the other room sounded like he walked right off the pages of GQ Magazine.

“I’ll be right out,” Jake yelled back.

A minute later Jake came back out from the kitchen. He was drying his hands on a towel and took a look at the two men before him.

“Hi.” Jake held out his hand in gesture. “I’m the owner. Jake Shepherd. What can I do for you two gentlemen?”

Both men returned the gesture and they shook hands. The taller of the two was who offered introductions. “Mr. Shepherd. This here is Special Agent Hanson. And I’m Special Agent Clarkson. We’re working in coordination with local law enforcement and would like to ask you a few questions.”

Jake nodded and ushered them over to the one of the small tables by the entrance. “You spoke with Tyler? Sounds serious.”

“It is, sir. Very serious. Your sheriff is making some rounds around town to check on some things while we hit some other areas.”

“I see,” Jake said. Before he sat, he realized how suddenly thirsty he became. It wasn’t every day the Federal Bureau of Investigation happened by his little bar. Even though he was a law-abiding citizen, he couldn’t help but get dry mouth from nerves, or at the very least morbid curiosity over what had brought them here.

“If you don’t mind, I’m going to grab a bottle of water. Can I get you two anything? Soda, juice, water?”

Both men opted for water, and Jake quickly went back to retrieve three from the fridge behind the bar.
