“I think I’d rather go to one of your mother’s dinner parties than this thing.”

“Agreed. At least she now has the sense not to schedule her soirees on a game night.”

It was an unusually warm late March night, and they were on their way to the chief justice’s official retirement dinner at The Seelbach in downtown Louisville. Attendance was just short of mandatory for nearby judges, and a good chunk of the state’s most powerful lawyers would also be present.

To complicate matters, however, that night the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team was playing in the national tournament for a bid in the national championship game. The chief hadn’t cared about the possibility of a conflict with his big night. He wasn’t a Kentucky grad, but a sizeable portion of the lawyer and judge attendees most definitely were. Even though scheduling the dinner on a known tournament night was rather nasty and passive-aggressive, it was the chief’s masterstroke in exercising a last bit of power over the legal community. Nonetheless, Nina expected many people would be watching the game in the hotel’s famed bar or keeping track on their phones—herself included.

It wasn’t a formal affair but nearly so. To really spiff it up, she’d actually had gone out and bought a new dress, something she hadn’t done in ages. Her choice had been a sleeveless black silk sheath with a rhinestone belt. The dress wasn’t to impress her fellow partygoers, with one exception. She had wanted to make Garner drool.

From the slack-jawed look he’d given her when he’d picked her up, she’d been successful.

“Really wishing right now that we’d opted to get a room,” he’d said as he helped her into her coat and then kissed her neck, brushing her hair aside to do so.

“You were the one who didn’t want to leave Ruby overnight.”

That much was true. Ruby still was having feverish bouts due to ear infections apparently brought on by teething. An allergist had given her the all clear, although Garner was thinking about getting a second opinion from a pediatric ear, nose, and throat specialist.

He hated to be away from his little girl. They’d talked a lot about another attempt at a getaway, but Garner kept putting it off due to Ruby’s health. Nina wasn’t worried about the baby and chalked up the problems to normal struggles an infant encounters in the first year. But she wasn’t going to try to dissuade Garner from his concern. It was sweet and well placed. And she knew they would eventually have their escape when he felt comfortable again doing it.

In the meantime, they had enjoyed repeated steamy nights at her house (when he got a sitter or Corrie to watch Ruby) or his house (always on the fold-out bed downstairs). It felt like old times but different. They weren’t going out for nights on the town or to events, the chief’s retirement party being a big exception. But the sex was the best she’d ever enjoyed and the intimacy—their emotional connection—so much deeper than before.
