“So, we’re back at square one,” Young said.

“To be fair, I don’t think we ever got off square one,” Spenser replied dryly.

“Yeah, I suppose not.”

Subsequent conversations with Garrett Amaro over the next few days only reinforced Spenser’s belief that he’d had nothing to do with Victoria Hall’s murder. Fortunately, that belief was finally backed up by some scientific facts. Arbery had found nothing on Amar’s clothing or on his body that tied him to the murder. On top of that, Amaro was sticking around Sweetwater Falls until Hall’s body was released so he could give her a proper burial. Those didn’t seem like the actions of a man who’d murdered his fiancée. In Spenser’s experience, a killer would have looked for a way out of town as quickly as possible.

Spenser pulled into the lot behind Dr. Swift’s multi-use office. He owned and operated his family’s funeral home, kept his medical practice, and also served as the town’s coroner. Swift wasn’t Spenser’s favorite person on the planet. He was gruff, cantankerous, and felt superior to everybody he came into contact with. Given the intersection between her job and his, theirs was a forced marriage, and she had learned to tolerate him. Most of the time. Not that it was always easy. Spenser shut off the engine and took a moment to steel herself.

“You want me to go in and talk to him?” Young offered.

Spenser chuckled. “I appreciate the offer but I’m a big girl. I can’t have you running interference every time we have to deal with him.”

“He’s going to be in a foul mood. No doubt, having to do a rush autopsy on Victoria Hall cut into his golf time,” Young said.

“No doubt,” Spenser said. “The way I see it, though, if he doesn’t want to do this job, he shouldn’t have put his name on the ballot in the first place.”

“That makes sense to you and me, but in case you hadn’t noticed before, Dr. Swift doesn’t always make a lot of sense,” Young said. “My understanding is he only ran for the position for the money and prestige.”

“Prestige he parlayed into a free membership at the country club?”

“Exactly.”

“Why spend your own money when you can play a round on the taxpayers?”

“I hate to admit it, but even though it’s incredibly cheap and sleazy, it’s kind of smart at the same time,” Young said. “I can’t say I wouldn’t pull the same thing if I had the chance.”

“You wouldn’t. You’re too honest and ethical,” Spenser countered. “Now let’s get this over with.”

They climbed out of the Bronco and headed through the back door of Swift’s building and into a small lobby. There was a desk set up in front of them with a door on the right. Three chairs stood against the wall on either side of the room, the walls were all a pale yellow, and cheap linoleum covered the floor. Black and white, picturesque photos of the town hung on the walls behind the chairs in the small waiting area.
