Chapter Seven
Renee
ITâS BEEN A FEW WEEKS SINCE THE FIRST threat was left on my porch. Iâm honestly not sure if thereâs been anymore or not because Shadow hasnât said a word about it. We talked the day after it happened, and I told him that I completely agree with not knowing whatâs going on unless he feels itâs something that I really need to know. For the time being, weâre staying at the clubhouse and Mike is with me anytime I have to go to work or therapy.
Today, Iâm at work and itâs been non-stop since I walked through the doors. Weâve had everything from the common cold as the weather starts to get colder to broken bones, heart issues, and car accidents. I love the days when weâre busy, even if it means seeing so many people in pain. Thatâs the one part of my job that I canât stand. Iâd rather be back up on the maternity floor where, for the most part, happiness is the main feeling. But Iâll take what I can get and make sure that Iâm there to help as many people as possible.
âRenee, you feeling okay?â Liz asks, sitting down next to me as I take a breather in the lounge.
âNot really. Iâve been feeling off for the last few days. I donât know whatâs wrong,â I tell her, putting my head down on the table in front of me.
âWhatâs going on?â she asks, rubbing my back as she sits down next to me.
âIâve been so tired and nauseous. Itâs been at least a week,â I answer, not lifting my head.
âAny fever or anything else?â she asks, continuing to rub my back.
âNo. At first I thought I was just getting back into things too fast, but I know in my gut thatâs not it. And, with the stress of everything going on, I havenât had my period, so thereâs that too,â I explain as I finally lift my head.
âAre you sure youâre not pregnant?â Liz asks, standing up to walk over to the fridge and grabbing the ginger ale that I have in there.
âNo. I mean, this isnât what I felt like when I was pregnant with Dylan,â I tell her, thinking back over everything thatâs gone on lately. Shadow and I arenât exactly using protection, but with our schedules itâs been hectic.
âLetâs go,â she says, grabbing my drink and walking out of the room. âWeâre going to the lab now so that you donât have to worry about this all day. Youâll know one way or another and can make the right decision about what to do. Besides, youâre a nurse and will realize that not every pregnancy is the same.â
I follow Liz through the halls in a daze. Is it really possible that Iâm pregnant? I mean the last few months itâs been hit or miss if I even see Shadow. Heâs up before me to go to work and then comes in just before I fall asleep. Heâs exhausted and hasnât taken a day off in weeks.
