Chapter Five

Winter on the Hudson

After her infatuation with Michael Flagg had exhausted itself, Susan promised herself that she would try to be good for the rest of the year. Then the incident occurred in the library. Susan was seated at a table in a long gallery, with her books spread out around her, when she noticed, out of the corner of her eye, some papers spread out on the next table, including an envelope with a familiar letterhead.

Susan made sure that no one was around before walking up to the table and taking a really close look at the envelope, which was identical to the one in which her favorite spanking magazine came delivered. Whoever was sitting at that table was a subscriber, just as she was, to Hugo Sands’ quarterly journal. Susan wondered whether she should say something as soon as the girl came back. Surely the young lady would be thrilled to discover a kindred spirit here. Susan sat down to take notes on English history.

About twenty minutes later a tall sandy haired boy she knew well from the drama department came and sat down at the table, not noticing her across the way.

Marcus Gower was handsome, with smoky blue eyes, a wide mouth and a lean physique. He came from a wealthy New York family and was the darling of the drama department. Marcus was popular with all women and girls. He was active on the newspaper, the debating club and the men’s track team. He was lazy lidded and cynical, but was also warm, clever, quick to tease and on good terms with everyone. When he cleaned up smartly and put on a suit, except for the length of his hair, he could have passed for an usher at a Republican fund raiser. Dressed down, he looked like a rock star.

Marcus had strong ambitions to go on the stage and managed to garner a plum role in every campus production.

Susan stared at him in fascination. Of course she had seen him around, but had never entertained a fantasy about him, except for two hours one afternoon when she was painting flats on set crew for a play in which he had a role, and had overheard him scolding an actress in the cast for not making it to rehearsal the previous night. The tone in which he used the word “young lady” had made Susan’s tummy clench with that certain feeling.

Feeling her eyes on him, Marcus looked up and gave Susan his standard, off the shelf, charm a pretty girl smile, vaguely recognizing her from set crew, then began to read again. Susan felt her face grow warm as she wrote a letter to Anthony on her pink legal pad.

“Dear Anthony,” it read, “There has been an interesting development around here which I thought I would consult you about before pursuing.

It appears there is a boy in my class whom I find attractive and who is without a doubt into it. I will never be able to resist testing him now that I’ve been made aware of his proclivities.
