Chapter 11

Dak had to harden his heart. The torment on Sophie’s face hurt him as much as that bullet would have. She didn’t belong in this life. He watched her to make sure she didn’t fall apart. Hendrick held her elbow, but she still held her own weight. Losing her husband didn’t bring her to her knees. That steel Dak admired so much held her up, filled her eyes behind the tears and fears.

Come on, princess. Show me what you’re made of. Because deep down, he couldn’t let her go. The episode upstairs showed him that. This was on his terms.

“They were going to kill him no matter what.” Hendrick spoke low near her shoulder.

Her lips trembled and her nostrils flared. With an audible swallow, she lifted her chin.

That’s it, princess. You belong with me.

“Nothing I did would have mattered.” No more question. Acceptance filled each breath as they evened out. The change in her captured him.

“No.” Dak didn’t need to remind her he would have killed him.

“But this isn’t over, is it?”

Dak shook his head. The husband hadn’t been a problem to begin with. But the money. Money controls and changes situations in a way that’s unpredictable.

He looked at Gear, who was on the line with Roen, and just finished typing furiously. Cole could pass for Roen in a pinch, but Gear looked frazzled, which was hard to do with that man. Computers weren’t his thing, but he was next in line with Cole working the kidnapping. “They’re in the north part of the city. That’s all we got.”

Roen’s voice came over the line. “They’ve got some serious blockers up. But with that much security, I’d say it’s their primary location. Knowing this much will help with everything else I’ve got. I’ll find them.” Roen hung up before Dak answered.

He hoped they found them before they made their next move.

“Where are King and Ember?”

“They stayed up front.” Hendrick cocked his head to the door. “Someone walked in as you bellowed.”

Dak frowned. Business was good—on both sides of it—but people walking in the front was rare. Ember came back.

“King is still up front. The guy hasn’t left yet. I love watching tiny men shake at the sight of one of you guys. But he’s determined.” Ember shrugged.

“What’s the job?” Dak waited for something ridiculous.

“Company theft. They need the proof. King told him he’d have to wait, the men needed for that are already occupied, but he won’t leave.”

“Pull him up on surveillance, Gear.” Dak turned to the monitors and waited while Gear pushed the few keys needed. The man struggled to breathe and hold himself up as King glared down at him. “Run his face.”

Gear’s eyes widened, but he grabbed the still image and put it into the program Roen had. Dak called King and watched the other man answer his phone on the video.

“The only reason you’re waiting is because he isn’t leaving on his own?” Dak believed King had the same suspicions as him.

“Yes.”

“Get rid of him. I don’t have time for this petty shit.
