Exhausted but satisfied with the little bit of cleaning in the kitchen and pantry I managed before my stomach started eating itself, I step into Everett’s apartment. Mrs. Murry’s check is heavy in my pocket, but it also means I will not be taking on any new debt with the plumber.

And I can use the remainder of my advance to start making payments back to Everett as soon as this week.

By the time I’d left, the mold guys were still working heavily, so even as I’d wanted to get an update, I forced myself to leave. Tomorrow will be soon enough for a check in.

Aldo rushes in and rubs against me, his tail wagging, so I kneel down and rub his face. “Movie night, bud? What do you say?”

Someone clears his throat.

I look up as Everett steps out into the living room, and every hormone in my body implodes. He adjusts his cuff links and then looks up at me, blue eyes so damn bright they’re near blinding.

Oh. Fucknugget.

Dressed in dark navy-blue slacks and a white button-up, he looks absolutely edible. Without even starting it, I know any hero of a cheesy rom-com I would have picked tonight is going to pale in comparison to the thirst trap currently staring back at me.

“Hey,” I say, awkwardly clearing my throat. “Sorry.”

“Why are you apologizing?”

“I honestly have no idea,” I reply with a half-laugh. “I’m headed to take a shower, and then I’ll be disappearing into my room. Cheesy movie night for me.”

“Fun,” he comments. “Oh, my brother had your car returned. It’s in the garage, parked in my guest spot.”

Joy churns with the idea of yet another debt to be paid. “Thank you so much. If you get me the invoice—”

“None needed. He was able to repair both tires.”

“I don’t need a handout.”

“It’s not a handout,” he replies. “My brother doesn’t charge unless he can’t repair the tire.” Someone buzzes. Everett crosses the living room in elegant strides then hits the button to let whomever it is up without asking.

“Tell him ‘thank you’ for me, then. I really appreciate it.”

He nods. “I’m going out. There’s food in the refrigerator if you’re hungry and want to eat in. But if you want to eat out, there are some takeout menus in the drawer by the sink.”

Eat out. If only you’d have used any other word combination because all I can see now is his head between my—I shake it off.

Bad girl, Nova. No men.

“Great. Thanks.”

The elevator doors open, and a woman with hair so pink it looks like it came straight out of a bubble gum wrapper, and legs the height of skyscrapers steps out, wearing a bright red dress. Her green gaze apprises Everett with hunger before she turns it on me and it morphs into disgust.

“Daphne, this is my house guest, Nova. Nova, Daphne.”

“Nice to meet you,” I say with a smile.

“You too,” she replies, though it’s faker than the boobs currently sticking out of the top of her dress.

“I don’t always look this way,” I defend.
