Chapter Eight

“The spare clothes for the servants are in this closet,” Robin said.

Dorian groaned. He was so not looking forward to wearing vampire slave scrubs, but he’d done worse things in his life for his freedom. At least the clothes were clean, and despite the ugly teal color, the uniform was also big enough that he could wear it over his real clothes.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this,” Dorian said.

“My father, brothers, and some of the assassins will already know you on sight. It’s better to not give the servants something to be suspicious about.”

There had been servants who’d seen Dorian’s face in the throne room, but both he and Robin were banking on the hope that they had all been too caught up in their work to be paying much attention to Dorian’s face.

“Do you think Oskar’s wife will notice that her husband isn’t back yet?” Dorian asked, recalling that the man had a wife.

Though he couldn’t imagine why that woman would want to marry an obviously gay vampire, never mind the fact that Oskar wasn’t much to look at to begin with.

Was money really that important to these people?

He looked over at Robin. The man was still searching through the servants’ closet, pulling out supplies, broom handles, and anything else Dorian could use that would help him with his disguise.

Okay, Dorian knew vampires who didn’t care about money, and now he could put Robin into that category as well. That would have to be enough.

“I doubt it. He requested a separate bedroom when he came. I understand they don’t sleep together very often, and I don’t think she minds that at all.” Robin put the broom down on the floor and kicked it hard until the end with the bristles snapped off.

“What are you doing?” Dorian asked.

Robin held up the now extremely pointed tip. “A weapon. We don’t have any guns yet, so this might help until we can steal them from the guards.”

Dorian took the spear and stared at Robin. “You know I’m going to have to use this to kill those guards if I want to take their weapons, right?”

Robin ducked his head. “Yeah, I know.”

God. How was it possible that this man was as gentle and caring about life as he was? He wasn’t a healer like Will, and had never been put into slavery like Noir, or had someone he loved sold like Frederik, yet he was still so open with his emotions, and he was willing to help Dorian, even though Dorian could offer him none of the comforts he’d grown up with.

The man was going to leave behind everything he knew, for an ungrateful human and a hard life.

Dorian planted a gentle kiss on the man’s mouth again, and unlike the last two times when they’d kissed, now Dorian took the opportunity to fully realize how soft Robin’s lips were.

He had to pull away when he felt the touch of Robin’s tongue against his lips.

“I’m sorry,” Robin said quickly, and when Dorian looked at him he noted the quick rise and fall of the man’s chest.
